Lesson Comments
I had a very difficult day with Aubrey. She was on edge and refused to write summaries for the Roman Emperor Comparison assignment. I really try to make the assignments simple and hold her hand while we go through the comparisons so she doesn't get overwhelmed, but she acts like she doesn't understand even after I feed her the answers. As I tried to change direction because I noticed her shutting down, she became agitated and faced the wall. I feel a bit manipulated, but it is hard to tell how much of her uncooperative manner is behavioral or chemical. I gave her a break, we went for another short walk, and then came back and reviewed the chapter on the whole. She is supposed to take a quiz on Friday.

"Flowers for Algernon" short story
Lesson Outline
The first part of the class, Aubrey and I talked about the upcoming story, especially with regard to intelligence and what that really means. Aubrey then read the first part of the story, which occurs before Charlie's operation. I followed up with questions about the story, including who Charlie and the other main characters are so far, whether she thought Charlie was a good candidate for the operation described in the story, among others. After, Aubrey worked on vocabulary from the story, writing definitions and using the words in sentences.

Lesson Comments
Aubrey continues to struggle with responding to basic reading recall and comprehension questions, such as who the main characters of the story are, much less engage in any discussion about the story. She needs complete hands-on guidance and prompting for nearly every task, especially written.

Monotremes, Marsupials and Placental Mammals -
Aubrey was given several areas of inquiry to research and questions to answer about the differences between the three types of mammals. She was asked to identify which part of the mammal brain controls complex behaviors and rudimentary behaviors. We investigated the purpose of the placenta, and the benefits of this strategy of reproduction. In a similar fashion she researched how mammals without a placenta manage to care for their embryos. We watched a video of a kangaroo fetus searching for the pouch and the manner by which it is fed during its development. We also watched video of echidna and other monotremes who lay eggs.

Bird anatomy and adaptation-
Aubrey completed several pages of questions related to the characteristics related to the anatomy and biology of birds. These detailed questions covered the topics she has been given, and serve as a test. Aubrey was tasked with listing the challenges and adaptations vertebrates faced when moving from living in the ocean to existing on land. Other questions expanded on information we have not covered in class, so Aubrey and I took turns researching the answers online, together. We researched the timeline of adaptation, and the anatomy of the brain. We also explored some unique physical characteristics of birds.

Lesson Comments
Aubrey was extremely agitated during class today. She said she couldn't focus on anything and couldn't comprehend the lessons. It seemed to be a medical problem, so we shifted our focus and did an on-topic online activity.
