Science:
Dolphin Survey -
Kelly participated in a scientific survey of dolphins along the oceanic coast of Palm Beach County. The Survey started at the Jupiter Inlet, and was directed south with the Palm Beach inlet as the terminal destination. Dolphins were encountered within 15 minutes and they were approached directly. Each dolphin was photographed and the group was monitored for several hours. The group started as four, and grew to about 25 when we decided it was time to leave them and head back to the Jupiter Inlet. Kelly helped collect data, keeping notes on the environmental conditions for the survey and at intervals during the encounter. She also collected Video of the dolphin behavior. She was given instruction on the natural history of bottlenose dolphins and the marine environment in south Florida. Kelly was asked to submit a video and a short written report about her experience on the dolphin survey.
Assignment
submit the video and a short written report about your experience on the dolphin survey.

Science:
Kinetic and Potential Energy -
Kelly completed two worksheets provided by her teacher in Ohio. She researched the types of energy involved inside a hair dryer, a guitar, a power plant, and a skateboard rink. In the second worksheet she investigated the process of photosynthesis and the types of energy involved in biological processes.
Kelly and I reviewed the main literary elements from this short story, then I administered a quiz covering our literary analysis and the vocabulary.

Kelly is a wonderfully motivated student. I believe she will do very well on this quiz. I will ask Elise to scan the quiz and email it to me so I can email it to her teacher. The session also went longer than expected because of the quiz.
We worked several assigned problems from her textbook, ranging from sketching a scatter plot to estimating a regression line and finding its equation. We used both the graph of the line and its equation to determine values of the dependent variables for given values of the independent variables.

I was a substitute. Kelly is a very pleasant young lady with a nice attitude toward learning math. She seemed to understand today's procedures and concepts. I showed her how to do one of the problems on the graphing calculator for familiarization purposes.
We read from her textbook about the policies of Andrew Johnson and Ulysses Grant during Reconstruction, including the Freedmen's Bureau, the Enforcement Acts, the creation of the Ku Klux Klan and the Amnesty Act of 1877. Kelly completed her assignment packet, as we read. I also researched and printed newspapers from both the Republican North and the Democrat South that gave us a good idea of the contrasting sentiments between the two regions.
She is still working on scatter plots graphing them, as well as the line of best fit. She is now creating the equation for the line of best fit to then predict a future outcome.
We read the assigned reading on the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War and discussed the challenges the newly united government faced in rebuilding the south and protecting the rights of newly freed slaves.
