Practice Tests
Lesson Outline
Kelly set up an account with College Board and installed the free app on her phone for daily practice. We will do the SAT Question and Word of the Day and she can continue on her phone or computer. She also took note of other helpful sites. She was familiar with Quizlet, which will allow her to use flashcards to study SAT/ACT vocabulary and have the ability to hear the proper pronunciation. We also looked at practice using the Khan Academy website. It will help to focus practice on questions Kelly missed on diagnostic tests and she will later be able to transfer PSAT results from College Board so that custom practice sessions can be utilized. Today she took a practice Math test which Jackie put together. She also read a reading passage example, learned some strategies and tips, and took a practice language and writing test. We read and discussed the explanations for correct and incorrect responses. We watched the Khan Academy SAT practice video on YouTube. We also discussed the optional SAT essay question and looked at the prompt. Kelly asked about scores, so we looked at a chart showing the spectrum of scores as compared to the old SAT and what kind of score would be better than average or outstanding. Her goal is to score better than a 30 on the ACT and above 1200 on the new SAT. I printed out pages from the ACT Study Guide relative to grammar rules we discussed yesterday.

Intro to ACT
Lesson Outline
Kelly started with a Diagnostic Test in English. She did not do well, but also had not taken her medication, so I am certain that will have a big impact on the results of her next Test. We only took the test as a measure of where she is for her preparation. These tests will help determine in what areas she needs to focus or improve. Afterwards, we looked to strategies for the English section on the ACT Study Guide, specifically rules of grammar and themes of questions on the test. Kelly made note of that location to go back to in the future. It is a pdf.

Nikon camera -
I showed Kelly how to use her new Nikon camera. We found the battery charger and plugged it in to get a charge working so she could use the camera. After a tour of the buttons on the camera, the battery was charged enough to show her how to control the focus control, so she could take photo with the subject off center if she chose. We then discussed how to change the f-stop to widen or narrow the frame to isolate a subject in the field of vision. Finally we discussed how to change the aperture to capture movement in a photo.

Thursday, March 31, 2016
2:30 - 3:30; 120 min.
Science:
Food chain -
Paige and Kelly worked together to work a food chain lab. We used test tubes to illustrate how energy moves up the food chain. Plants convert solar energy into usable chemical energy, but only 10% of is transferred to the first level consumers. From that, herbivores use 90% and carnivores can absorb the remaining 10. The test tube lab illustrates how important it is to eat mostly plants and animals that are fed plants. We discussed what a good diet means to a health future. The girls then worked together on a game of food fight. While they built a food web, we discussed the environmental concerns for each species they added to the process. We worked out the food web for top predators, and again for first level consumers.
