Aiden learned about the principle of uniformitarianism, relative age dating and absolute age dating. He learned the principles of relative age dating, watched an animation on the principles, and completed workbook questions placing the rock layers in chronological order using the principles: superposition, original horizontality, lateral continuity, inclusions and cross-cutting relationships.
Aiden and I went over the answers to the Earth Science unit review. He began the lesson Analyzing the Rock and Fossil Records. He analyzed a photo of the Shoshone Road cut and brainstormed what the distinct parts are, the fault, the layers, which layers are oldest and youngest, etc. He estimated how old the Earth is. He watched a video about Hutton's Unconformity.
Colson and I read about the three types of faults: strike-slip fault, normal fault and reverse fault. He diagrammed them on notecards with definitions. I diagrammed them on the board and explained. He used modeling clay to create a syncline and anticline.
Teddy completed his interactive calendar, read and discussed his vocabulary words, finished his calendar talk, worked on his phonics activities, put together his daily sentence puzzle, and learned what a marine biologist does.
Libby completed her interactive calendar, read and discussed her vocabulary words, finished her calendar talk, worked on her phonics activities, put together her daily sentence puzzle, and learned what a marine biologist does.
Colson took the earthquakes quiz and we went over the correct answers. We began learning about mountain building. We discussed and read about folds, synclines and anticlines. I diagrammed synclines and anticlines on the board, and we watched a video animating them.
