Colson completed the Investigation "Mutation Classification" where he classified different mutations as positive, negative or neutral. We discussed each one. He chose the genetic mutation for eye color, researched it, and wrote a summary of what he learned.

Chris read about three different types of courtship behavior: competition, use of pheromones, and mating calls. He completed the Investigation "Staying Safe" where he analyzed silhouettes of three birds (goose, hawk and tern) to determine how a baby gosling would respond to the shape of the bird flying above. He read about innate and learned behaviors. He created illustrated notecards for innate and learned behaviors. We discussed.

Lesson Outline
Colson reviewed mutations. He read the text "A Closer Look: Why so blue?" and we discussed how blue eyes are the product of a genetic mutation in a human ancestor. He analyzed a chart of genetic disorders. We discussed the locations of the mutations on the different chromosomes and genes that cause the following disorders: cystic fibrosis, breast cancer/ovarian cancer, Williams Syndrome and PKU.
