Today we went over the correct usage of a comma. Jeron practiced placing the comma between two independent clauses joined by a conjunction, and then he identified their need while using descriptive and introductory clauses. Next, we started reading a novel called Tank and Fizz. I asked Jeron to point out such dependent clauses when he noticed them in the sentences we read. We also stopped to discuss paragraph and dialogue structure in the novel.
Today, we began by reading Zlateh the Goat. We discussed the descriptive imagery and the moral of the story. I also asked Jeron some comprehension questions. Next, we continued to work on typing the first draft of Jeron's fantasy story. We discussed developmental edits and revised the story as Jeron determined.

Jeron was extremely overtired and did not want to participate in the writing process too much. Discussing the story development and any revisions was all I could get him to do. He did enjoy the story though.
Today Jeron and I completed the graphic novel we have been reading. We also completed the first chapter of the story we've been writing in tandem. Lastly, we started typing the story.
Today we continued to read from the graphic novel Earthling. We discussed the building of suspense and mini conflicts that encompass the subplot. Jeron is really enjoying this novel. Next, we continued to work on the two character science fiction story that Jeron fashioned. Jeron is getting more comfortable writing descriptively and taking more chances with experimenting with the plot. I think it makes him feel more confident that we are doing it together.
Today, we continued to read from a graphic novel and discussed plot development and elements as they related to the story. I asked Jeron to predict what might happen next to help him think about a plot. I also went over different types of conflict in a story and then I asked him to consider conflict as a driver of plot and climax as it applies to his creative writing story. Lastly, we continued working on the two character story we started a few weeks ago.
Today Jeron and I continued to work on a creative writing activity where we write back and forth together within the roles of two characters in a science fiction story. This activity aims to help Jeron feel more comfortable writing and to give him the opportunity to practice drafting using descriptive imagery, narration, and dialogue. He is learning to consider setting, characterization and plot through this subtle and nonthreatening activity.
Today I gave Jeron a number of writing prompts to choose from. He didn't seem interested in any of the images or hypothetical situations I presented, but somehow I was able to get him to write a back and forth question and answer style story. I took on the role of a naive character and played a game where I asked him written questions to motivate him to describe his made up world. Jeron really enjoyed this activity and ended up writing a ton. Happily, our hour together flew by.
Today, we went over the literary devices of personification, alliteration, and imagery. We then started an "I Spy" activity where you write the sensory details of an object in the room and the other person has to figure out what it is from your hints. Next, we read from a graphic novel called "Earthling" and discussed the dialogue and illustration style of narration. Lastly, Jeron continued working on volume 2 of his graphic novel.

We had another problematic day, but not as bad as it was the last time.
