I tried to take this session on the road.
Alex's family cancelled at the last second after I had plotted my 20 hour driving plan specifically to accommodate his lesson and adding an additional 2+ hours to obtain internet while on the road.
Alex and I mapped out a plan for the summer that will lead him to improved study techniques and a deeper understanding of extended texts and their value in our lives.
We have made plans for him to start his journey with the summer reading from his school, and to supplement that material with books or passages that genuinely pique his interest.
Bobby and I discussed the book A Time To Kill and read the summary together. Bobby and I picked two extra activities to do for the book. Bobby drew a cartoon that described an important event in the book. Bobby researched the KKK and racial segregation in the south. Bobby made connections about how racial segregation has improved and still exists today.
After some brief introductions, Andrew and I started working together to understand Andrew’s principal concerns with Reading and Writing.
He communicated to me some of his most uncomfortable pain points. We discussed the value of reading and writing and the deeper meanings of its value to our society.
Baylie wrote a 5 paragraph essay from start to finish within the time constraints of a single class session.
She did an excellent job.
She planned out her essay first.
She then wrote her essay.
I gave periodic reminders of the time and at one point let her know that she may need to write what she can think of in the moment and then go back and build upon her arguments after finishing the essay one time through.

I started this session with Cabo. Then, part way through the session, I switched over to Baylie for scheduling reasons.
Andrew and I worked to get to know each other on our first session working together.
He explained to me some of frustrations with reading, and his preferences. He expressed his natural inclination toward articles and shorter written pieces. He communicated the topics that he currently finds most engaging (including Japanese, Black Holes, Sports, Art, and recently Star Wars).

Andrew audibly moaned when I entered the class with his current English novel.
I brought up the book on 3 different occasions and he went into full evasive mode.
Rather than force the issue, I continued to build the relationship and look for genuine areas of interest in hopes of pursuing longterm progress over a short-term victory.
