We read the story of Sybil Ludington who became famous for her horseback ride through upstate New York to warn militia that British troops were raiding and burning Danbury, Connecticut. What makes her ride even more impressive than that of Paul Revere's ride is that she was just a kid of sixteen when she heroically rode a treacherous forty miles during the middle of the night. Then we practiced identifying the correct homograph or homophone for sets of sentences. Next we practiced identifying abbreviations with proper punctuation.
Charlie and I discussed the summertime. We took time to revisit some of the things that we did throughout the time we spent together since Charlie came to the Batt School.
Charlie spent time in the morning copying his vocabulary words and definitions on to flash cards. By doing this, he created a matching game which he then did perfectly. After lunch, Charlie picked five of his vocabulary words and wrote a 3 paragraph story using them in context.
Today I substituted for Dr. Abby while she was stuck on the turnpike. We talked about what he did after school and what healthy foods he enjoyed eating.
Katya had some short essays that she wrote on a couple of different subjects. She printed them out and I helped her make revisions on one of them. As she was working on those revisions, I read and made corrections to half of a second essay. I explained my corrections and she was left to finish editing both papers for homework.
Natalie watched a short video on American author, Stephen Crane, and then did a reading on his biography and writings. She annotated the pages of the reading as she went along, highlighting main points and new vocabulary.
I proofread a paper that Katya wrote for her English class summarizing a novel that she read. My suggestions and corrections included errors in tense, ways to better integrate quotes from the novel, and where she needed to expand upon her explanations of plot.

Note Taking, Speaking and Listening Skills, and Grammar
Lesson Outline
We focused on notetaking. Charlie will be practicing taking notes during most of the sessions that I have with him from now on (there is a format that each page of notes will follow). We also spent time learning good speaking and listening skills for both sharing information and gaining new knowledge. Finally, we reviewed nouns and all of the different types of nouns.
