Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.
Lesson Outline
Nicholas was in a good mood and worked well on his math skills. He did not write down the assignment in his agenda as "there was too much to write and I had already written down that tomorrow is Picture Day." He was reminded of the importance of writing down the page numbers of all his assignments, so we did extra on the homework packet that was in his book-bag, completing all but the very last page for the entire week. Nicholas seems to have a good handle on equations. We worked on applying properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract, using one to check the other. (Florida State standard MAFS.1.OA.2.3). Specifically, Nicholas worked on choosing numbers to complete equation problems to reinforce prior math skills acquired. He also wrote number sentences to match pictures, wrote related facts about it, and matched addition and subtraction equations to related facts. Nicholas has difficulty writing certain numbers, inverting or reversing the 5 and 6; he will ask for a verbal prompt to cue him as to the orientation of the number. We next moved onto spelling exercises. I helped Nicholas recognize letters by writing them on his back, using my finger. Nicholas had a wonderful time guessing the letters and did well on this task- something which he was frequently proud to boast. This technique was suggested to his mom as a fun and beneficial means by which to help Nicholas remember the spelling of words. It uses a sensory/visual memory 'imprinting' approach, which may prove to be a helpful and effective way for Nicholas to retrieve the correct sequence of letters when spelling a word.
- Nicholas practiced his spelling words.
- Nicholas read Mat and The Fish Wish.
- I read The Cookie Fiasco, Ballet Cat Dance Dance Underpants, Ballet Cat What's Your Favorite Favorite?, and What Puppies Do to Nicholas...

Nicholas was moving a lot. He tried sounding out his spelling words, but not all of them could be sounded out phonetically.
Algebraic concepts/ work with addition and subtraction equations
Lesson Outline
Nicholas was very tired at the onset of the session and complained that he was not feeling well. Nicholas and I worked on the problems together and completed the 22 questions on page 105. Nicholas had written it down in his agenda but he wrote it as if it was his English assignment; this was pointed out to him and he was reminded to be careful when writing them down in the future to avoid any confusion. Nicholas was tasked with working with addition and subtraction equations and to circle which equations were true and mark those that were incorrect with an X. He also had to color the true equations in a problem-solving section. Nicholas was able to complete his assignment satisfactorily but did require some prompts and guided assistance today to sustain attention and remain focused as he was not feeling that well.
- I read If You Take a Mouse to School, If You Give a Dog a Donut, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, and If You Give a Mouse a Brownie to Nicholas.
- Nicholas read with me If You Take a Mouse to School and If You Give a Dog a Donut.
- Nicholas read Jig and Mag and Mat to me.

Nicholas had a hard time focusing today and argued with me when I asked him to do some of the activities. I allowed him to draw at the end of the session if he did his work.
Nicholas went on a dinosaur adventure. He used different props. He came up with different scenarios. He likes to direct the scenes.

Lesson Comments
Nicholas was very cooperative. Even when he didn't want to read, he did choose a book and read it to me.
Nicholas worked on page 95 in his Go Math workbook. He retrieved the page out of his bookbag and I checked to see that he had written it down correctly in his agenda as well. The practice today focused on using addition to check subtraction. Nicholas completed his assignment which started with subtraction problems. Nicholas had to then write the correct answer to the problems, using addition to do so. He demonstrated good comprehension and was able to apply skills and concepts correctly in accordance with expectations. He also correctly selected the addition sentences, in multiple choice format, when checking subtraction problems, demonstrating good integration and synthesis of material. Nicholas answered a word problem by bubbling in the correct answer to the problem. We finished up the day playing math games on the computer to reinforce and consolidate gains.
- Nicholas practiced ish words.
- Nicholas read The Fish Wish.
- Nicholas and I read Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late.
- I read The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Knuffle Bunny, and Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs to Nicholas.
