Sam sent me a chat at 9:45 a.m. informing me that he had to help his father and would be back at 10:00 a.m. Session began at 10:04. Sam was given questions on Chapter 4 of Make Your Bed, which he was to read last night. We discussed the first-person narrative point of view, utilizing context clues to define unfamiliar words, and then I assigned Sam the task of reading the chapter again so that he can apply the new knowledge of the narrator's setting to better understand what he reads. We also discussed him taking the IXL diagnostic and was very willing. He has not taken it yet and I will share results with Ms. Jackie as well. This will pinpoint the skills he needs the most practice with.

Sam had an errand to run and arrived and was with me from 10:01 to 10:30 a.m. He shared with me that his Grandfather was at D Day and when asked about his future, he shared that he wasn't sure whether he would go to work for his father or attend college. I outlined some of the benefits of attending college and Sam expressed interest in being a pilot. We discussed how educated a pilot must be. I introduced the autobiography/memoir of 4-star admiral William McRaven and foreshawdowed some of the lessons learned. We discussed the Navy Seal Museum in Ft. Pierce and the significance of today's date. His homework is to read Chapter 4 of Make Your Bed for tomorrow's class.
