Alexa took a vocabulary test, and we completed the Agatha Christie work. She is beginning to write a screenplay that will include necessary elements for 10th grade writing.
Katya took notes and discussed a new vocabulary list including Greek and Latin roots, and etymology. She will take a test next week. Following this, we reviewed the beginning of The Tempest by watching a scene in the movie.
Katya and I read The Tempest, Act one, Scene one, together. We reviewed previous Shakespeare facts and the background of this play. We made use of the footnotes to better understand the dialogue and what was occurring. We watched this scene in the film for the last ten minutes of class, which clarified what we read and showed the creative leeway taken by the producer (Prospero is Prospera! (for example). The movie is from 2011 and is quite good -- it augments our reading well.
Alexa reviewed Shakespeare's bio and we began to watch "The Tempest" a 2011 movie with captions -- stopping to discuss characters and plot, inferences and viewpoints.
We began with one of the lessons on Vocabulary from The Great Courses. Alexa took notes as we listened to the lecture, and we discussed the words and strategies. Then Alexa and I read parts in the play "Love from a Stranger" through Act 2. We continued watching the 1937 movie. Allusions, old sayings, vocabulary, and values keep coming up for thoughtful explanation and discussion. We did a bit of research on the main actor, Basil Rathbone.
