We discussed the elements of a high level descriptive essay. Then Bella began writing an essay describing her trip to Miami. She introduced the essay with a quote about the importance of travel and then transitioned into her clearly stated thesis. She decided on the details she wanted to expand upon for her supporting paragraphs. She will complete and edit the essay tomorrow.
Jaydn read, analyzed, and discussed O. Henry's short story The Gift of the Magi. She then wrote responses to questions concerning the theme of selflessness and unconditional love. She also wrote to analyze the last three sentences of the short story.
Jaydn completed the reading of A Thousand Splendid Suns yesterday. After analyzing the novel together, she wrote an analysis essay comparing and contrasting the two protagonists and the trait that connected them.
Bella completed an essay she had begun last week. Upon completion, she edited the essay for grammatical mistakes, for off-topic information, and specific diction usage.
We studied Shakespeare's use of the symbols and the imagery of "milk, blood, and water". With respect to Lady Macbeth's chiding Macbeth as being too full of the "milk of human kindness " , we explored Shakespeare's reversal of traditional gender roles . Macbeth becomes associated with mother's milk and Lady Macbeth calls upon the spirits "to unsex me here". We tied the notion of women traditionally characterized as the "fair "sex to Shakespeare's ongoing "fair is foul" motif as the "fair" Lady Macbeth's ambition degrades her to a character of murderous "foul" action. Matthew discussed Lady Macbeth's hesitation to murder Duncan because of Duncan's resemblance to her father. We noted how this hesitancy suggests that she has some degree of conscience which will haunt her later in the play. She also analyzed the characters' development throughout the novel.
Cabo completed the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. Upon the completion of reading, he answered essay questions centered around character development, the author's use of irony and the themes of love, loyalty, suffering and perseverance, and the rights of women.
