We reviewed in detail Matthew's study guide answers to Act I. I provided instruction on the Act's major theme illustrated by the "fair is foul" motif, as well as the symbolic imagery of "milk, blood ,and water." We examined how Shakespeare breaks traditional gender roles by depicting Lady Macbeth as the catalyst for murder and power noting how Lady Macbeth insults her husband's masculinity by claiming he has too much of "the milk of human kindness" and then asking the spirits of evil to "unsex " her by turning her breast milk(womanhood) into bile. I highlighted how Lady Macbeth , the" fairer" sex seeks to hide her foul intentions-murder- thus dramatizing the "fair is foul" motif . Last, we examined the ongoing use of dramatic irony in Act I . Matthew took notes on these subjects and supplemented his study guide answers based on our class discussion. HW- finish Act I study guide questions for Monday.
