We read the next chapter of Long Way Down. We discussed symbolism, specifically why the author chose the names of his characters and what they represent.
Ben read two out of three pages in a short story entitled 'The Interlopers,' by Saki. He asked to see the questions but did not want to respond, summarize, or engage in discussion about it. He requested some time privately to call his dad, and I allowed him 5 minutes; however Ben did complete the assignment in accordance with expectations.

I subbed for Christine b. this morning, Monday 1/29/23, from 9 - 9:45. Ben did not want to do any work and said "I don't know what this says about you but I need to take drugs to make your voice palatable." I had barely spoke other than to introduce the assignment that was left by Christine and explain there were questions to answer at the end. He also told me that he went to the doctor on Friday and was not in school, which I knew - and his doctor told him his problems were stress-related. He mentioned that he is not taking his medication anymore which he says is making him feel worse. "My dad basically told me to try to deal with it, in so many words."
Andrew watched a short animated video of The Old Man and the Sea. We discussed similarities and differences to the book. He wrote a paragraph comparing and contrasting the movie and the book.
Andrew finished his The Old Man and the Sea essay. He read a paired short story called "The Reef." We discussed the main character's motivation of greed and compared it to Santiago's. Andrew answered the guiding and discussion questions.
Andrew proofread and edited his The Old Man and the Sea essay. He worked on changing everything to present, not past tense. I prompted him to elaborate more on specific quotations.
