Alexa and I worked on long division of polynomials and synthetic division of polynomials. After seeing a few examples, she remembered how to do them. We also spent time talking about graduation and college, as she needed to sort through some of her disappointments about the present, and fears of the future.
We added and subtracted functions. We also performed composite function operations. This involves finding the value of a function for a given number, then taking that number and evaluating a different function with that number.
The J and S curves revisited, and examples of the effect on the population of uncontrolled exponential growth... Limiting factors which cause a population to level out at the carrying capacity were listed and explained. The dramatic decline of a population to below starting numbers was presented in terms limiting factors, along with the exponential growth curve of humans. What will happen eventually?

Lesson Comments
Alexa was present for only 30 minutes. Still managed to cover some important concepts, but not in the depth I would have liked.
"The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Lesson Outline
Alexa and I began by identifying what is an allegory. I presented an introduction to the story. Alexa had read THE SCARLET LETTER by the same author. We discussed the similarities between the novel and the short story. We discussed the similar time periods. We read the story and began discussing it. We discussed why the story is characterized as an allegory. We previewed the essay questions about the story that Alexa will begin answering and finish tomorrow dealing with the story.
Show me drawings from her sketchbook, photograph five and email to me.

Alexa returned my call 30 minutes into the session. She flipped through pages in her sketch book and chose five of the best to photograph. She emailed them to me. I told her that she had completed the project for me, but I did not know if she had completed the necessary hours to complete the course.
We factored trinomials, factored but grouping, and did function operations today. The function operations required Alexa to multiply and divide powers. The rules for this require us to add or subtract the exponents. In this case, the exponents were fractions, so she had to get a common denominator.

Lesson Comments
Alexa did not attend our morning session, and was late for our afternoon session.
I encouraged her to stay online to get more hours, but she did not want to and ended the call.
