Zack and I discussed his idea for the IB Individual Oral Presentation: The Watchmen. He is considering focusing on the ways that the visual aspects of this graphic novel contribute to the reader's perception. I urged him to consider the complexion, disfigurement, socio-economic status, the play of light and shadow, and colors, and he was amenable. I took notes and found some research through Google Scholar that he might integrate with his ideas.

Today, Robin took her unit 1 vocabulary test, earning a perfect score of 100%. Afterwards, we discussed her journal entry on "leaving footprints in the sands of time." She made a list of future goals and examples, and will complete the journal entry as homework on her Penzu journal.
Today, Robin took an online practice quiz for unit 1 vocabulary. She did well. Her test will be on Tuesday. We also read two poems by Longfellow: "A Psalm of Life" and "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls." Topics of discussion: stanzas, rhyme scheme, imagery, and message.

She told me she would have the work she owed me today. She also had an oral quiz scheduled. Coincidence? Was it anxiety preventing her from coming today? Just a thought.
Today, Robin and I worked on a new vocabulary list that will prepare her for upcoming SAT or ACT exams. We went over meanings, synonyms, and uses. We also read "Roots" and discussed the diverse background of Americans in "Defining American."
Assignment
New reading. Prepare for oral quiz. Complete vocabulary unit.
Today, Robin and I read "Letter to my Daughter" by Abigail Adams, where Adams (wife of second U.S. President, John Adams) describes the brand new White House. Robin and I compared Adams's White House to Obama's White House. We also reviewed personal letters and public letters. Robin concluded the session by writing a personal letter to her favorite television show's director/writer, and sending the letter in a self-addressed stamped envelope, following basic letter writing format.
