Ryan solved systems of linear equations by graphing. He converted the equations to slope intercept form to graph and then determined the intersection point.
This activity involved graphing linear equations using various techniques. Ryan graphed linear equations using slope intercept form, he also determined linear graphs by calculating ordered pairs. He also supported his work by graphing linear equations using the qraphing calculator.
We started reviewing slope. The activity then focused on graphing techniques and slope intercept form of a line. We finished this lesson learning how to work with linear equations in various forms.
The activity centered around slope. Ryan learned how to calculate slope by just looking at a picture of a line and then he calculated slope given ordered pairs. The last concept we discussed was slope intercept form of a line.

Ryan and I continued to review parts of speech in more depth. I gave him a new packet for 9th grade grammar in which he can practice and do exercises on the concepts we learn. We will continue to use the Grammar Rocks video clips for reinforcement.

Today, Ryan and I reviewed last session's material and then practiced the parts of speech, prepositions, nouns and verbs in particular. We are using the Grammar Rocks video in clips to catch Ryan up on basic elements of grammar on which he has fallen behind. This will give him a foundation for 9th grade.
The first part of this activity was to review the concept of slope and where and how to find slope. The second half Ryan learned how to graph linear equations and to manipulate linear functions so they can be graphed.
This activity was in three parts. First we discussed the meaning of slope. Then Ryan determined the value of slope after given a picture of a the line. He then determined slope with ordered pairs. Ryan finished the activity by determining slope after given an equation of a line.
Ryan and I are reviewing and practicing all of the basic foundational elements of grammar and syntax. We are discussing the functions of different parts of speech and the roles they play in syntax. My plan is to move onto subjects and predicates, which we started today, and then clauses, sentences and fragments. We will move onto more complex sentence structure, which I will have Ryan practice as we move forward. From my experience, this is a key skill that can hinder students when they get into high school if they are not prepared. Ryan's homework (just for fun) is watch School House Rocks' Grammar Rocks video (about an hour and can be found on YouTube ) with his friends. He's never seen it and I find this helps students remember.
Ryan is going into a new school for 9th grade this coming school year. We are prepping him so that he is ready with the skills needed for 9th grade. This session, we met for the first time, discussed Ryan's interests, and his strengths and weaknesses in English. We made a plan and set goals for the rest of the summer. We will be working on strengthening basic grammar, sentence structure and writing convention skills. I believe Ryan is a bit behind in these areas. Ryan also would like to work on his handwriting this summer. I am currently looking for some short reading texts with cars and auto mechanics as the subject area. This is Ryan's passion. This will allow me to assess his reading comprehension skills. No homework for this session.
