Dylan read "The Pet Hen'. He benefits from encouragement to sound out words rather than guess from the context. He was pleased when he completed reading the book. In phonics, we continue to practice reading long and short vowel, one-syllable words to reinforce phonetic rules. Today, we began to pre-write a narrative paragraph. We brainstormed ideas and narrowed it down to four. Next week, we will work on the outline and then completed the essay. Dylan enjoys listening to, 'Flat Stanley: The Mount Rushmore Calamity'. He made predictions, drew conclusions and identified character traits. We watched a brief video on the making of Mount Rushmore. Dylan wrote in his journal about the making of Mount Rushmore.

Today's spiral review included two-digit addition and subtractions, pattern completion, determining halves and estimation. We practiced time to the half hour and and adding and subtracting. Dylan enjoyed a timed game in which he was given a monetary amount and had to determine the correct combination of coins.

I'll begin the lesson by providing practice to increase fluency. I'll introduce the game, 4 in a Row. Dylan will be required to read words with welded letters while playing the game. The rest of the lesson will focus on spelling words and then marking the different elements in the words.

We continue to work on reading and spelling long and short, one-syllable words. With encouragement, Dylan read a story that utilized short vowel sound words and sight words. In his journal, he wrote about where he would like to be mailed if he was 'Flat Stanley'. He enjoyed listening to an adventure 'Flat Stanley' took to Mount Rushmore.

Spiral review included estimating, 3 step adding and subtracting, ordering numbers from least to greatest and word problems. We reviewed time to the half hour. We also continue to practice adding and subtracting
two-digit numbers.

Today's lesson will concentrate on Block 1-Word Study. Dylan will produce the sounds for several vowels, consonants and welded letters. Dylan will then play the game, Ladder, which will provide practice reading words with welded letters. In order to increase fluency, Dylan will read 10 sentences that contain words with welded letters.

We continue to read 'A Pig Can Jig' to promote blending and self confidence. In phonics, we are focusing on CVCe words and long vowel, one-syllable words with two vowels next to each other. Dylan enjoyed listening to the last chapter of 'Flat Stanley'. He did well making predictions and drawing conclusions. Dylan wrote about Dunmore Beach today in his journal. Focus was on letter and word spacing, capitalization and end punctuation. We used the internet to research the beach and find a picture for the journal.

Spiral review included fact families, working with zero, money and place value. We practiced identifying the name and worth of a penny, nickel and dime. Given a specific monetary amount, Dylan enjoyed 'buying' pretzels using plastic coins. Dylan practiced adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping.

With encouragement, Dylan did well reading a chapter in 'A Pig Can Jig' which focuses on short vowels and sight words. Reading this book is utilized to build reading confidence. In phonics we worked on CVCe words, as well as one syllable words that have two vowels next to each other. Dylan benefits from reminders to slow down and blend the whole word. He enjoyed listening to the next chapter in 'Flat Stanley'. Dylan likes to predict what will happen next. Lastly, Dylan wrote two sentences about his trip to the Bahamas. Capitalization, end punctuation, and letter and word spacing were stressed. He was very pleased with what he wrote. We used the internet to find pictures to go along with his writing.

Spiral review included place value, money, addition and subtraction and time to the half hour. Dimes were introduced today. We continue to practice pennies and nickels. Dylan did well practicing two-digit addition without regrouping.
