Dylan had a difficult time staying focused during today's lesson so we weren't able to accomplish everything that was planned. When Dylan was asked what letters made certain sounds he was able to picked out the correct letters. During the dictation, Dylan wrote real and nonsense words with a few minor errors. Dylan quickly marked the different elements in the real and nonsense words without any errors.

Substep 2.1 Les. to Develop Accuracy: Words with Welded Letters
Lesson Outline
The main purpose of today's lesson is to increase reading accuracy of words with welded letters. In block 1 Word Study, Dylan will review letter sounds that have been taught. He will isolate the sounds in several words using the finger tapping strategy and then spell each word using the magnetic tiles. His accuracy will be Charted as he reads 15 words that contain the welded letters, and his fluency will be checked as he reads 10 sentences. In Block 2 Spelling, Dylan will recall the letters that make certain sounds. He will write real words and nonsense words that are dictated, and mark the different elements in each word. At the end of the lesson, Dylan will read a short passage and answer comprehension questions about that passage.

Lesson Comments
Dylan was able to reproduce the sounds for the letters that he was shown. Most of the sounds he was able to quickly produce. This was not the case for the -ng and -nk welded letters. More practice is required so Dylan will automatically reproduce the welded letter sounds. I was not able to complete all the activities that I had planned. I will continue with Block 2 and 3 at our next session. I was pleased that Dylan remembered so much since he has not been seen since May.

phonics, oral reading
Lesson Outline
Review of the CVCe reading pattern was a primary focus today. Dylan needs encouragement to sound out the whole word rather than guess based on a few letters. After the review, he did well reading words with the CVCe spelling pattern and determining if they rhymed. Dylan read a story in the book, 'A Pig Can Jig', which stressed short vowel sounds and a few sight words.

Dylan enjoyed an activity in which he was asked to create his own animal and then answer questions about what the animal ate and drank, where it lived, how it regulated its body temperature and what it did to survive. Dylan put a lot of thought into his answers, particularly those involving survival of his animal. He listened to 'The Cat in the Hat' and then did very well circling the correct picture to answer questions about the story. He responded, in writing, to the prompt, 'If the cat in the hat came to your house, how would you get him to leave?' We worked on blending long i words with the consonant, long i, consonant silent e spelling pattern. Dylan benefited from reminders that the vowel is long when the silent e is at the end of the word. He practiced handwriting, phonics and spelling by writing the name of the picture below it. Pictures included the long i, long a, short a or short i sound. Dylan did well playing 'Addition Connect 4'. Lastly, Dylan enjoyed participating in a oral direction activity.

We talked about the elements of a story. Dylan listened to 'Nate the Snake is Late' and was able to identify the beginning, middle and end of the story. Dylan worked very hard on his paragraph on spearfishing. He completed the paragraph today and chose a picture from the computer to put on the top of the page. He was proud of his paragraph and all the steps he completed to culminate in the finished product. He was pleased that he did very well reading a short book that utilized mostly short vowel and sight words. Dylan also worked on blending CVC words, unscrambling letters to spell one syllable words, sight words and word families in the 'Reading Eggs' program.
