Today, Dylan shared the writing he has done throughout the year with Miss Caroline with me. He was so excited to show how much he has improved and accomplished. I am so proud of him! We also read books he chose from the library.
Today, Dylan watched the end of "The Miracle Worker" movie that he had started with Ms. Caroline this morning. He read the book "Helen Keller," and this was a reward for his reading.
This morning, Dylan completed a few real world word problems to apply his learned strategies. He circled the given information and looked for clue words before finding the unknown addend in subtraction problems, adding 3 addends, and 2-digit addition with regrouping problems. Then, he solved numerous adding 3 addend problems, looking for addition strategies to quickly solve. Finally, we practiced place value to the hundreds place with Dylan writing the number of ones, tens, and hundreds in given 3-digit numbers along with correctly saying the numbers.
We took a nature walk. We did balancing and backbending on tires as props observing the trees. We did the yoga slide and ended learning a song in the secret garden.
Dylan began by reviewing r-controlled vowels. He did a spelling dictation exercise with his magnetic letters where I gave him a word with a suffix and he said the word without the suffix, tapped out the word, spelled it with the magnetic letters, and then added the suffix. He also completed a spelling dictation in his writing journal spelling review words, current unit words, trick words, and one sentence.
We began a book on Helen Keller today. Dylan had many questions about how a deaf person can learn to sign or speak, how a blind person could be taught to read and/or write braille. We talked about people persevering to overcome obstacles. Dylan enjoyed looking in an American Sign Language book. I showed him how to spell his name with the sign language alphabet.
This week I thought I would surprise my students with a sunday making party as it will be the last time I will be with them this year. Dylan was excited and showed great self control. He chose one toping and politely declined all the others. It has been a pleasure to work with Dylan this year.
Dylan continued to work on blends today. He read a list of words with consonant blends as well as sentences with blends. He practiced reading the sight words for, eat, no, of, under and who and read a story in his reading book called "The Best Spot" about animals in the forest. He identified the main idea and key details of the story.
