Dylan finished reading a book on Helen Keller and was very interested in her story. He began watching the movie of her life called "The Miracle Worker".
Dylan and I began with making equal groups to model multiplication. He drew objects in groups to show an equal amount in each group before writing the number of groups, amount in each group, a repeated addition sentence, and a multiplication sentence. Then, Dylan looked for clue words and circled given numbers in word problems. He solved subtraction problems with unknown wholes, solved comparison problems to find how many more, and solved addition problems. The remaining time was spent on Mathseeds skip counting by 5s, making a pictograph, and measuring the length of objects indirectly.
Today, Dylan learned how to make chicken noodle soup. In order to save time we deboned an already prepared chicken. We worked on motor skills by teaching Dylan proper knife techniques and different cuts. He is a quick learner.
Dylan and I also discussed proper sanitation in the kitchen and the importances of keeping a clean space.
Dylan continued the lesson on consonant blends today. He blended and read words with consonant blends and identified the blend in each word. He worked on new trick words could, would, and should and did a read, spell, write activity with these words. He reviewed all of his trick words and high frequency words. He also reviewed r-controlled vowels. He did a dictation exercise with sounds, words, and a sentence.
Dylan worked on digraphs blends today. We went over how a consonant followed by a digraph is a digraph blend. I built words with his sound cards and he blended, read them, and identified the digraph blends. He did a spelling exercise with his magnetic letters where I gave him words and he spelled them with the letters. He practiced reading words with short u sounds and read sentences and a story called "Cubs in a Hut".
Today, Dylan was suffering from a cold and was very tired during our session. We read together and discussed the stories. In addition, we made a list of some of the describing words used in the stories.
Dylan wrote an excellent story entitled "Stingy the Bee." He wrote a whole half of a page himself and was so proud of his accomplishment. He raced to the car to show his grandmother. I am so proud of how willing he was to put pencil to paper without complaint. He has come so far!
This morning, Dylan and I practiced a few different skills. He began by telling time on analog clocks and writing the time to the hour and half hour. Then, he completed the daily word problem, circling the given numbers and looking for clue words to solve the 2-digit subtraction problem. Next, he practiced measuring the length of objects, comparing the lengths of 2 objects, and determining whether 2 objects were shorter or longer. Finally, Dylan took the show me your skills quiz on Mathseeds on adding dollar amounts, scoring a 9 out of 10 and solved a few multiplication problems from yesterday's lesson.
Dylan and I worked on the basic concept of multiplication, using arrays and quick pictures to represent equal groups. Together, we made real world scenarios involving an amount of objects needing to be shared equally among friends. Dylan drew a quick picture to represent the number of friends before placing the number of objects to be shared equally into each group. Then, he used repeated addition of find the total in all. We also discussed the rules of multiplying by 0 and 1 along with how to multiply by 2 by doubling the other number. To finish, Dylan solved multiplying by 0, 1, and 2 facts.
