After a review, Dylan did well blending words with beginning digraphs that were followed by a short vowel and then a consonant(s). He did well determining the digraph with which a given picture started. Dylan read a short book that focused on short vowel sounds. I read him a short story that focused on digraphs. He did well hearing the words with digraphs. Dylan also did well answering questions related to the characters, setting and sequence of events in the story. We talked about fact vs. opinion. We worked on a paragraph about Dylan's favorite fruit together. Together, we completed a circle map, prewriting graphic organizer and then wrote a paragraph using the prewriting tools. Tomorrow, Dylan will practice using the same tools to write his own paragraph. Lastly, I read part of the book, 'Gulliver's Travels' to Dylan. He enjoyed listening to the story and predicting what would happen next.

Lesson Comments
Dylan needed some redirection. He lacks confidence in blending sounds. When engaged and not rushing, he did well blending one syllable words. He loves to be read to.
review of first grade skills and concepts, money, addition game
Lesson Outline
Dylan did well completing a spiral review of first grade math skills and concepts. He enjoyed a 'Connect Four' addition game. We also reviewed the coins and their worth. Dylan would benefit from additional review of the coins.

Lesson Comments
Dylan needed redirection. He did well on the spiral review. However, he did not remember the names or values of the coins with the exception of the penny. He flipped quite a few of the numbers when writing.
Dylan signed his final piece of art. Dylan and I took his art outside to spray a couple of coats of modge podge to set his piece. We let the piece dry, placed hanging strips and placed the piece on the mural wall.
We blended some mindfulness and breathing exercises with makeshift archery.
We did an exercise with a jar of water and food coloring to visually represent how our calm, clear brain is affected by all of our different emotions (colors). Then we went outside, practiced mindful walking and some more breathing exercises from the "Breathe like a Bear" book.
The remainder of the time was spent playing with a "fishing spear" he created with a wooden stick and rubber band. We practiced distance shooting which was a lot of fun on our last day together.
During morning snack, Dylan listened to Rescue Off Peanut Island, a story written by Jane Niebch, a teacher and author at the Batt School. After snack, all of the students played outside for extended recess time and last day fun. Then, we spent time in his room organizing and packing items for Dylan to take home. Finally, he spent time on Mathseeds focusing on subtraction strategies. Dylan compared amounts to find the difference using the number line and objects to compare. He took the end of lesson show me your skills quiz and answered 10 out of 10 correctly.
Book 2, Lesson 1 Words with welded sounds ang, ung, ing, unk, ank
Lesson Outline
Dylan started the lesson playing Quick Drill in Reverse. He found and pronounced the vowels. Dylan sounded and pointed to the letters of p. qu, v, ch, th, and ck. He told the letters and sounds for welded sounds ong, ang, ank, ink, onk, and unk. Dylan read the words sank, dung, and dunk from the magnetic letters. He pronounced sing, bang, tank, kings, and thinks from the tiles. Dylan is working on auditory discrimination between the "k" sound and the "ng" sound at the end of a word. Dylan practiced the sight words: asked and her. He worked on dictation getting all sounds correct. Dylan completed the real words and the nonsense words. He did well with "quink" which includes command of the use of "qu." Dylan spelled: asked, her, was, and, and she correctly. The sentences are difficult for Dylan. He repeats the sentence after he hears it, but cannot keep a grasp on the words once he starts writing. He begins to have omission of words and letters. After several pauses and repeats, Dylan was able to complete the dictation. We will continue to work on these sounds over the summer. Dylan worked on the analysis for this dictation and then we continued with Because of Winn Dixie.

Dylan is a very cooperative and happy child. We will keep working on the areas he struggles with.
Book 2, Lesson 1 Words with welded sounds ang, ung, ing, unk, ank
Lesson Outline
Dylan started the lesson reading from a stack of words that have b/d and also different medial closed vowels. Dylan got these right. I am working on his anchoring of the letters b/d. I encourage Dylan to trace the letter on the table before he decides what it says. This seems to help when he does it. Dylan practiced all the vowels. He practiced the letters and sounds of consonants and digraphs: f, wh, v, qu, x, z, ch, s, and d. He practiced welded sounds: ung, ing, ong, ang, ank, ink, onk, all unk, am, an. Dylan still has some trouble remembering that the welded sounds have three sounds welded together. He seems to short cut these sounds with inaccurate results in the reading of the word. Dylan practiced the words rings, malls, and hens using the magnetic letters. He identified the base word and suffix. He read sung, banks, bunks, tanks, and dunk. Dylan identified the welded sounds in these words. Dylan practiced a large stack of 2.1 words playing "ladder." Dylan then was charted using the words on p. 4. Dylan made the following errors: sack for sank, bung for dung, sing for sink, dang for bang, tack for tank, and bunk for dunk. Dylan knows that the interventions for b/d are necessary, but he still blurts out the wrong letter without turning to the interventions. We will work on isolation of words with this issue when we continue our work during the summer and next year. Dylan read sentences on p. 8. Dylan left out the "n" in most welded sounds when he was reading. He also mixed up b/d. Dylan practiced Quick Drill in Reverse. He practiced all vowels. He practiced consonants and digraphs: p. qu, v, ch, th, and ck. He practiced ong, ang, ank, ink, onk, and unk. We will finish this lesson tomorrow.
