Today Andrew learned the stick vowel spelling rule. He practiced spelling with the new rule and learned how it changed the c and g to a soft sound. He also practiced his new red words.
Indigo wanted to write all the capital letters on the whiteboard. She needed help remembering what some of the letters looked like, but remembered most. Indigo will benefit from practice of correct formation of letters. She enjoyed a cut and paste activity in which she cut out pictures and placed them under pictures with which they rhymed. She then drew pictures of items that rhymed with jet, leg and peg. Indigo did well writing the initial sound of the pictures shown.

Indigo is very social. She sometimes needs encouragement to stay in her office rather than socialize with the older students.
During the first part of the session, I reviewed Sebastian's assessment with him. We went over the problems he answered incorrectly. I then prompted him with similar problems to make sure he understood the skill. We completed his homework assignment. He seemed very eager to complete assignments and stated "he loves Math now".
I reviewed Sebastian's math assessment with him. I targeted the questions he answered incorrectly. I explained how to solve the problem and provided additional problems (related) to ensure proficiency on that math skill. At the end, he worked on his math fluency on Xtra Math.
I reviewed Sebastian's assessment/homework with him. I not only helped him to understand the errors in his answer but instructed him on how to solve the problem. I also challenged him with similar problems to ensure proficiency. He had a positive attitude and left feeling confident about himself.

Substep 4.4: Introducing the suffix, ive, and spelling words that end with the letter, v
Lesson Outline
At the beginning of the lesson, I will introduce the new suffix, ive, and the new syllable, exception to the v-c-e syllable. Sophia will be shown how to mark the new syllable and be given the clue word and sound of the new suffix. I'll also bring in the new spelling rule, a word never ends with a "v". If the ending sounding of a word is /v/, you add a silent "e" to the end. The vowel will be short. The math review will cover the topics that have been covered in the last several lessons.

Sophia did OK during the Wilson lesson. She seemed to grasp the concepts that were introduced and was able to read words with the new elements. During the math review, Sophia was a little argumentative. She insisted that she solved a problem correctly even though the answer was wrong. It took several different explanations before she agreed with me. This behavior and her activity level interfere with her learning how to solve problems with multiple steps.
This afternoon we practiced our note taking abilities while learning about the evolution of organisms with backbones. We completed the first chapter of our movie LIFE and began the second chapter which focuses on body plans, vertebrates and evolutionary adaptations. Homework: none
This morning Bobby began our class with a brief discussion on what material he had covered during his tenure at the Pine School. Bobby had indicated that his class was not using a textbook but had just completed an exercise on identifying all 50 states in the US. Bobby did not have a syllabus which would make the determination of a good starting point a bit more challenging. We began a discussion surrounding the recent presidential election and identified some of the topics that were controversial. As a student athlete, Bobby mentioned the recent issue focusing on players in the NFL not standing for the national anthem. I asked Bobby to explain to me what the national anthem really stood for. For that matter, I was curious as to what the American flag really symbolized and added that each state also has their flag. What was their function? I also asked Bobby to assume the role of a veteran or a member of a family who had lost a loved one during a war or armed conflict. The purpose was to encourage Bobby to assume different points of view in examining a given issue or topic.
