Today's lesson examined covered identifying expressions of culture and how they help us learn about a culture. We discussed dance, music, visual arts, literature, and food as important expressions of culture. We read that art can also include forms of personal expression of worship and entertainment, as well as ways of retelling and preserving a culture's history. We discussed how history shapes how culture groups view the world, how expressions of culture often honor the heroes and heroines who brought about successes in a culture's history, and how cultural holidays often mark important events or heroes and enable people to remember and celebrate their heritage. We ended our session reading about customs and their importance as an important outward display of culture. Chris was interested to read about some examples of customs in other cultures.
The session commenced with Chris sharing his excitement regarding the increase in the number of subscribers to one of his "YouTube" channels. He was quite distressed regarding the loss of subscribers last session. He indicated that he attributed this increase to the recent "shorts" that he has been posting. This topic afforded an opportunity to discuss various aspects of social media, including the aspects of "followers," "subscribers," and the sharing of videos. Key aspects of social communication were reviewed. Conversational expansion was variable this session, as cycles of reciprocity were often characterized by abrupt topic shifting. Familiar topic transition strategies were reviewed. Expanded focus in the area of providing inferences and predicting outcomes
was supported with scaffolding cues.
I lined up Santino's food options and utensils and asked him to select his thermos from the array. After I opened the lid, Santino reached for the spoon, prompted to identify it, and began eating his pureed lunch quite enthusiastically. He has improved his eye-hand coordination but was prompted to eat at a slower pace today. Santino did not want to eat his Little Bites snack but requested Fruit Loops and drank from his water bottle. Santino additionally requested and consumed an organic nutritional shake today just prior to leaving. He drank it out of his bottle this afternoon, but I plan to encourage to drink from a cup the next time. He was afforded praise for using longer sentences when requesting food or drink, and this will continue to be reinforced to expand his language repertoire.
Santino was in excellent spirits and socially greeted me with a huge smile and sustained eye contact. He asked to eat and I encouraged him, via verbal and cues to request to eat in a complete sentence ("I want to eat, please"). Santino continues to improve his understanding of expectations and elongating his sentences, although prompts remain necessary. Although he did not particularly enjoy his main meal today, he did eat half, and then requested and independently ate yogurt and Fruit Loops; he also received and enjoyed an apple juice squeeze I gave him and he drank an organic beverage which was transferred to a cup. Although Santino is as yet selective with his food, he is less resistant to being introduced to different options when shown them and seems to be more willing to expand his food repertoire, especially as regards volume and textures.
Christopher did well sorting his spelling words by spelling patterns. Given sentences, Christopher confidently identified the action verb and determined the tense. Explanatory writing was reviewed. Christopher wrote the steps necessary for brushing teeth using time order words. After reviewing the features of an expository text,Christopher read an expository passage. He answered questions about the genre and interpreted the chart included. Additionally, Christopher was tasked with reading sentences, identifying the context clues for the word in bold and writing the meaning the word.

The homework questions were reviewed, evaluated, and discussed. The structure of DNA and the replication of the DNA molecule was reviewed using an animated video. All the enzymes involved, and base pairings covered in class were reinforced using the video. This will now lead us into the synthesis of proteins based on the DNA code, as well as the importance of these proteins in the process of life.
