THE BOOK THIEF by Zusak/SADLIER VOCABULARY
Lesson Outline
GT and I had a lengthy discussion of Part Four of the book which he finished reading for homework. We talked about major themes and major conflicts. GT also wrote his answer to the essay question as part of an evaluation for this part of the book. We then moved to the vocabulary book. We started a new unit. We read the informational article highlighting and introducing the new words in context. We began working on some of the application activities. GT will read Part 5 of the novel for homework.

Lesson Outline
Abby and I continued with the second set of words in the vocabulary unit. I introduced the words. Abby created her mini study cards for the words. We completed all of the application activities for both sets of words for the unit. We then continued with our study of the novel. We discussed thoroughly the section Abby had read for homework. We answered in detail the discussion questions. We discussed quotes important to the plot used throughout the novel. Abby will continue reading for homework.

GT and I completed one unit of the vocabulary book. We began a new unit. We studied the words and their pronunciations. We began doing some of the application activities. We then continued our study of the novel. The section of the book that GT had read for homework is titled "The Accordionist." So I played my 48 base accordion for GT this morning. I'm not very good, but GT enjoyed it. It really is an important object in our novel. We discussed what it symbolizes and why it is important. We also discussed thoroughly the pages GT had read. We also previewed the essay questions that GT will answer as his evaluation for this part of the novel. He will continue reading for homework.

Abby and I began a new section in the vocabulary book. I introduced the next 10 words. Abby made her mini study cards for these words. We did activities involving the new words and the previous ten words. Abby did very well. We then discussed the section of the novel Abby read for homework. We reviewed the characteristics of the Gothic novel and how those apply to the novel thus far. We also answered the discussion questions for that section of the book. Abby will continue to read the novel for homework.

Abby and I began a new lesson in the vocabulary book. I introduced the words. Abby created her mini study cards to learn the words. We then completed some of the application activities. We then continued our study of the novel. We discussed the chapter Abby had read for homework. I also provided some pictures of the mansion Manderley which is the setting of the novel so that Abby can get a picture in her mind. We also discussed the role of women during the 1930's and how that relates to the novel. Abby will read more of the book for homework.

GT took a brief essay assessment on Part 3 which required him to answer in essay form. We began reading the next section, and GT will finish the reading for homework.

We also answered some discussion/study guide questions. Abby will continue reading the novel for homework.

GT and I began a new unit in his vocabulary book. I introduced the words, pronunciations and the meanings. We studied all 20 words, and we completed most of the individual application activities. We then discussed the pages of the novel GT had read for homework. We discussed the imagery used by the author. We also discussed the different themes woven throughout. We also discussed how the author provided positive and negative connotations to the same objects. GT also wrote his response to the essay assessment of Part 2 of the novel. He will finish reading Part 3 for homework today.

We discussed the different types of conflict presented. We also discussed the technique of foreshadowing that the author cleverly uses. We answered the accompanying study guide questions.
