heterogenous solutions and emulsion useful in cosmetology
Lesson Outline
I had equipment and substances to be used to produce homogenous solutions, suspensions, emulsions and alcoholic solutions. The necessity to use different solvents will be determined and the pro's and con's of each discussed. This hopefully will lead into the formation of lotions, creams and ointments which can be applied to the skin and nails.

Review Unit (Test)
Lesson Outline
Today, Sam and I started Spanish class with a fun activity (singing/Speaking Skills )a classical song called "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas". Sam and I reviewed the Spanish textbook for tomorrow's test. We reviewed vocabulary and grammar notes. Then we watched a TED talk "What You Didn’t Know about Language Barriers" Roxanne Pomerantz - Roxanne brings to our attention language barriers. In a very interesting talk, she takes examples from linguistics, cognitive sciences, and her personal experience as an American living in Israel, to make a case for replenishing the world with multi-lingual people. Imagine a world without language barriers, and ponder whether the amazing ability that all children have to learn languages may be a helpful tool in conflict resolution.

Roxanne lived in Beersheva, Israel for six months to participate in the Overseas Student Program at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Roxanne was the winner of a campus-wide competition to be the Student Speaker representative. Her talk was inspired by her intensive Hebrew-language learning program (Ulpan) experience and by being part of an international student body that developed strong connections quickly with the help of a new common language. Exposure to the Hebrew language at a very young age through Jewish traditions gave Roxanne a natural advantage in the language learning process: an advantage which, through her debut-Ted talk, she wishes people will be inspired to give to others, simply by making a conscious effort to expose the children in their lives to foreign languages.

Properties of logarithms continued
Lesson Outline
I helped Samantha evaluate logarithmic expressions with various bases. The goal was to recognize how to use multiplication of logs by integers and addition and subtraction of logarithms. We evaluated logs with different bases, including common logarithms with base 10. There was no assignment.

Types of solutions
Lesson Outline
We used Sam's bottle of tea drink to review and reinforce the concepts of homogenous mixtures.
reading the ingredients label and discussing the solubility of each. The most common solvents were listed and the type of solution formed from water and alcohol discussed. The reason for the use of each was determined along with the drawback of using one solvent over another. Elixers and tinctures were talked about and the physical difference between them stressed.
Some less common solvent-solute mixtures were talked about and what they produce commercially and how they are used.

Translations
Lesson Outline
Sam worked through many translation problems on the computer. She was able to count on the coordinate plane the number of spaces to vertically and horizontally move. This is sometimes difficult to do, though, because our eyes get tricked and mistakes can be made with counting. I explained to her that a more accurate way to perform the translation is to write the coordinates of the original point, then add the translation values to get the coordinates of the image points. Some questions required deeper thinking, in that they gave the preimage and image points, and Sam had to find the value of the translation. It was great to see her work through and have some "a-ha" moments as she understood the process better.

THE LORD OF THE FLIES by William Golding
Lesson Outline
Sam and I continued our study of the novel. We had to complete reading chapter 8. We stopped several times to clarify plot and characters. We used the accompanying study guide questions as a springboard for our discussion on the chapter.

Properties of logarithms continued
Lesson Outline
The plan was to work with Samantha to study properties of logarithms such as multiplication expressed as addition of logarithms and division expressed as subtraction. Also, I was going to show her that to change raising a number to an exponent could be changed into multiplying the logarithm of the number by the exponent. Since Samantha was not present is school during our session, the lesson will be presented the next time I teach her. There was no assignment.

Review of Judiciary and Federalism
Lesson Outline
To address Sam's concerns on the two lesson topics, Sam worked on the two outlines( with questions ) I prepared on the judiciary and federalism. We also discussed the holding in Citizens United ,which was an exam question where Sam encountered some difficulty, to enable her to articulate the court's holding. With my assistance, Sam completed the outline on the judiciary. She indicated the review significantly clarified the topic. As such, we proceeded to the second review outline on federalism, which Sam started in class. For homework, Sam is completing the outline/questions on federalism . I will go over her work with her and address any further concerns or questions she has before we go on to the next topic.

Sam is usually diligent in completing her homework, but did not do her homework last night because she was out until 2:30 AM ! As you may know, she, consequently, was not in school this morning but was here for my afternoon class. I know she spoke with you about slowing down the pace of the course . Accordingly, as you can see, we are redoing some of the chapters where she feels she needs reinforcement. If there are other chapters she wants to revisit before the final exam, I will do so.
