Amira worked on creating a chart illustrating the five kingdom classification groups of living things. The kingdoms include Monera, Protist, Fungi, Plant and Animal. She will list the characteristics of each kingdom on her chart so that she can use it as a reference as we continue to work on classification.

Marine Biology:
Marine Mammal Science -
I introduced myself to Amira and we discussed some of her scientific interests. I showed her some images from my career, and started a presentation/lesson on marine mammals. I showed her photos from my expeditions: to Canada, to gather the first underwater film of Orcas in the wild; to Northern California to study and train captive dolphins. And we started to explore my wild dolphin experiences. Throughout my presentation, I provided general history information of each species I encountered.
Amira read Chapter 4 of modern novel, identified literary elements and cited MLA, then explained the deeper meaning or effect of each technique the author used.
Yoga and stretching...
We did a good number of sun salutation sequences, practiced standing poses and seated poses....
We ended our session with a 10 min. breathing and meditating exercise...
Current Events: We discussed the Measles outbreak - there have been 681 cases of measles across the US, the highest number of case since the disease was declared eliminated by the US in 2000. Why is this happening and why are there so many people who fear getting vaccinations for their children? Also, most of the current outbreaks are the result of people traveling to a foreign country and bringing this highly contagious disease back with them. Children in the US are susceptible to measles if they have not been vaccinated or are too young to have completed the series of vaccines that protect the immune system. - We then looked at how NYC, founded in 1625 (by Dutch settlers who originally called it New Amsterdam), is now a city of 8 million people, the largest city in the US. A lot of NYC has spread from its original state across the surrounding waters of the Hudson and East Rivers as landfill. - We then learned about a high school student in Santa Barbara, CA who's family lost their house last year from mudslides caused by heavy rains after the horrible, dry fire season in CA. He has started a "Bucket Brigade" to help others in the community adversely affected by the CA wildfires and mudslides.

Lesson Comments
-Amira's father called from outside of the US while we were in class. She took the call and I gave her time to speak with him privately. She spent about 45 minutes on the phone with him. We resumed the remainder of the lesson into last period. We are fortunate that we have a double period of social studies today!(FYI...Amira said her father is very concerned about her welfare at school because of the way Amira perceives she is being treated by Taylor and Abby. Mrs. Beadles and Mrs. Katchum are very negative influences and they convey negative things about school and Amira's experience here back to Amira's father. In addition, Amira was also caught in the middle of a meltdown that in her conveying of the story - became verbally and physically abusive between the Beadles' current nanny and the Beadles children yesterday. Fortunately, Amira is not going to be back with the Beadles this weekend. She is getting a ride to Disney World with Alexa after school and they will join Kate and her parents there.) Amira confides that she is intent on not returning to the Beadles' household.
In this session, Amira and I reviewed the Cartesian coordinate system, I would give her a coordinate and she would mark the location and then I would mark a location and she would give me the coordinates.
Amira did the Science and Social Science parts of the practice standardized test. She practiced her measurement skills including length and mass and volume. Amira ended the session doing a chemistry experiment. She mixed vinegar and baking soda which when chemically combined create a gas. The gas created blew up a balloon.
