Historic Literature about the oceans/the island of Palau
Lesson Outline
In this lesson, Amira was introduced to classic books that she may want to read due to her interest in legendary, but not confirmed to exist places. We discussed Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" and Jonathan Swift's "Treasure Island." We then turned our attention to the small and beautiful island of Palau. It is a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean midway between Guam and the Philippines. It is remote, beautiful and the common language spoken on Palau is English.

Lucky me! Amira was not on my teaching schedule today, but I substituted for (I think) first period science and third period math.

The Mariana Trench
Lesson Outline
We learned about the countries and islands closest to the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth. They are Japan, Guam and Indonesia. The Challenger Deep, in the southern end of the Mariana Trench (sometimes called the Marianas Trench), is the deepest spot in the ocean. Its depth is difficult to measure from the surface, but modern estimates vary by less than 1,000 feet (305 meters). There are some theories that there is sea life in the trench that may not be known. Also, can the Earth's core be reached through the Mariana Trench? There remains so much to learn about this part of our world!
