After watching the movie "Outsiders" Rory was asked to review the form, and identify the plot, setting & characters. He also provided his opinion about the movie, his recommendation, and his rating. He made connections to the characters and listed details about the movie using complete sentences.
Rory and I finished watching the film. We began completing the film critique. Rory and I researched some of the specifics on line. Then we began watching "The Help." We will work toward reading one of the novels that accompany one of the films that we viewed. Rory will also write a film critique of "The Help."

Lesson Comments
Abby was absent, so I had Rory for 30 minutes of her time.
Rory and I continued watching the film. We discussed the movie commentary questions so that Rory will be able to write a meaningful review when we finish watching it. We also discussed the plot of the movie and the development of the characters.

Trophic Cascades -
Rory and I watched several short videos showing what happens to ecosystems when changes happen at the top of a trophic pyramid. In one case the re-introduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park resulted in the increase in biodiversity, stabilization of riverbanks, and the return of lost forested areas. The second cascade describes how whales, returning after the devastation of whaling, have increased the fish population, by significantly driving phytoplankton to the surface to photosynthesize and reproduce, which also sequesters millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In both of these cases we studied the return of a species that humans had hunted out of ecosystems. In the first, humans brought the wolves back into the mix, in the second, the end of whaling has allowed for the natural return of the apex species. Rory and I discussed how cascades work and how far humans can influence trophic systems for positive results.
Rory and I continued watching the film. We talked about the plots and characters. We also previewed the movie review that he will write after we finish watching the film.
When we have 2 equations in 2 variables, and one of the equations has y written in terms of x, then we can use the substitution method to solve the equations. Simply take the equation with y isolated, and substitute it into the second equation where we have y. This will give us one equation with only the variable x. Solve it for x. Then take the x value and plug it into the other equation to find y.
Once I modeled one of these equations, Rory was able to work out the rest of them with minimal errors. He understands the concept and process.
