6-1 Ratios, Unit Rates, and Converting Units
Lesson Outline
Nicole successfully wrote ratios in simplest from, and wrote ratios as unit rates. We also worked out problems that involved changing units. I showed Nicole many examples, and I explained where to put the different units to get them cancelled. It is a challenging topic for students. We also practiced her 6 times tables.

Language Arts Enrichment
Lesson Outline
Nicole and I had a fantastic language arts session completing and editing her essay "The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise: A Hero's Journey." It is an excellent example of a five-paragraph expository essay. We used my Grammarly "premium" to double-check the grammar and punctuation. I recommend that Nicole install Grammarly premium for next year.

Unemployment in the U.S./Current Events
Lesson Outline
As a result of the pandemic, there are now 30 million unemployed people in the U.S. That is 10% of our population! We compared it to the Great Depression. In the 1930s, unemployment in the U.S. climbed to 25%! We compared the times and the circumstances. We concluded our look at current events with: some (but not all) Americans are beginning to return to parks, beaches and the great outdoors, "murder hornets" arriving on U.S. shores, and a young woman currently rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.

Animation 101 - Walk Cycle
Lesson Outline
I opened the animation file for Nicole, shared the screen, and walked her through using the brush and lasso tools to color in the character. Nicole was tasked with coloring one character on each of the nine layers. She decided to use different colors for each character to give them a little pop. Nicole opened the timeline panel and created a frame of animation for each of the layers. Nicole played her animation for functionality and made some minor color adjustments. Nicole completed her animation by creating a barn, moving the barn from right to left throughout the frames, and saved her work.

Ratios and Unit Rates
Lesson Outline
Nicole took notes on a guided note-taking form on Ratios and Unit Rates. A ratio is a comparison of two numbers, either separated by a colon, the word "to", or a fraction. When the denominator of a ratio is 1, then we call that ratio a unit rate. Examples of unit rates include price per gallon and miles per hour.

Nicole and I worked together to write a five-paragraph essay using the outline we created together. Nicole used Google Docs and showed me a tool called "MLA formatter," which makes setting up a paper using MLA format very easy. With minimal guidance, Nicole wrote the introduction and two paragraphs of the essay body. On Monday, she will complete the essay, and we will begin the editing process. Excellent work, Nicole.

Senate and State Responses to Re-Opening FL
Lesson Outline
Senator Diane Feinstein of CA urges Senator Mitch McConnell of KY not to bring Senate back in session at this present time. Feinstein said returning is dangerous and "sends the wrong message to the American people, most of whom are being asked or directed to stay at home." But in FL things are opening around the state. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties are actually not opening as fast as the rest of FL since virus numbers have been highest in these three counties. We looked at the differences in the re-opening process around FL, too. We viewed a sound bite from Governor DeSantis addressing the press and re-opening the state. He said that bars, fitness centers and places that offer personal services, likes hair styling, also will open later. People can schedule non-urgent surgeries again, he said, though it depends on a hospital's ability to handle surges in cases and availability of protective equipment. Schools will continue to hold online classes, he said. Kudos to Nicole for remembering the Governor's name and party affiliation. She now knows how to look for the (D) or (R) symbols before a politician's name on the news to find out their party affiliation.
