Audrey is doing very well in her SAT practice tests. Today, she requested some further instruction on the note summarizing section given the numerous ways this type of question is posed. We concentrated on how process of elimination greatly enhances the possibilities of deriving the correct answer. After further instruction, we then reviewed Practice Test #3 Mod 2. We discussed the use of commas and addressed use of transition words such as: next, similarly, thus and for example. We further addressed how to analyze a poem to identify the main idea.

We will go over the remaining problems in practice test 2. The last 5 are difficult problems. We will then begin Practice test 3. I will ask Audrey to do the first 10-12 problems as I observe her.

We completed test 2. I asked Audrey to do the first 10 problems in practice test 3 by thinking out loud so I could observe her thinking. She demonstrated very good thinking skills. In particular she didn't hesitate to try a different approach to a problem if her first thought wasn't getting her anywhere. She also checked her answers and she read the problem more than once to be sure she was answering the question that was asked.

After Audrey completed registering for the May exam, we worked on how to find clues to solve the vocabulary in context questions as well as how to address the note summarization questions. We further studied and completed practice questions on finding the main idea and supporting textual material for both literary and non-literary passages.

Lesson Outline
As Audrey indicated she wanted further instruction on analyzing and responding to the test's intricate logic questions, we today reviewed strategies for approaching these types of questions and then practiced answering a number of these types of questions from the practice tests. We further reviewed questions that are directed to sentence clarity. I provided instruction on the placement of modifiers and modifying phrases, and the avoidance of the passive tense. We then reviewed her homework practice test answers and paused to address vocabulary in context cues.

Today I completed instruction on SAT grammar by noting how the SAT often uses dashes in place of colons. I then provided instruction on how to strategize the logic questions. As we reviewed the logic questions from last night's practice test questions , I assisted Audrey in following the passage's syllogisms which then enabled her to choose the correct response. I then provided instruction on how to strategize the note summation questions after which we reviewed these types of questions from last night's practice questions. Where Audrey encountered difficulty ,I demonstrated how to find the best answer by focusing of the very specific nature of these questions and by eliminating responses that may accurately reflect the substance of the notes but do not address the focus of the very specific question.

SAT GRAMMAR
Lesson Outline
I provided detailed instruction on SAT grammar and punctuation questions. I specifically addressed the proper use of : semi-colons, colons, commas, dashes , and apostrophes. We studied the SAT's pattern of at times using semi-colons to separate items in a series as well as the SAT's penchant to use the dash in place of the comma. I stressed the need to avoid creating a run -on or fragment when choosing punctuation responses. We then worked on and reviewed a series of SAT practice grammar questions applying all of the above as well as sentence structure precision.
