Sofia seemed a bit off this morning so I gave her a few minutes before we were to start class. She spent this time with the film teacher looking over scenes shot yesterday. Afterwards I was about to get started and mentioned she was hungry as she hadn't eaten in 2 and a half days. I tried to get her food and water to help but she barely ate anything. I informed Judie and she talked with Sofia.
We read and studied Act I focusing on the significance and appearance of the key and lock motif. Sofia discussed how Annie Sullivan's past hinders her willingness to become emotionally bonded to another human being, recognizing that the lock and key motif applies to both Helen and Annie. In one portion of the dialogue ,we noted that the dialogue referenced a "key" 8 times. We further discussed the strained relationship between James Keller and his father caused by Capt. Keller's remarriage to Kate. We examined the tone and language of the dialogue that imparts this strain to the audience. Similarly, we examined Annie Sullivan's dialogue and inferred character traits such as humorous , stubborn and sarcastic.
After generally reviewing the legislative process, we focused on the role of Congressional Committees. I distributed a list of House and Senate committees noting which were the most prestigious. I discussed how seniority typically determines committee assignments and how committees can table or pass a bill. We last reviewed the historical genesis of the bicameral legislature, the impact of gerrymandering, and the role of the Courts in declaring unconstitutional certain legislation . There will be a final test on this chapter tomorrow.
In this activity, Sofia focused on simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting improper and mixed fractions. She also multiplied, divided, added and subtracted decimals.
In this activity, Sofia solved multi step linear equations using signed numbers and the distributive property. This exercise also had variables on both sides of the equality.
In this activity, Sofia again worked with polynomials by multiplying two binomials and combining like terms. Students like to refer to this process as FOIL.
In this activity, Sofia worked with polynomials adding and subtracting like terms and writing the polynomial in reduced form. This exercise also used the distributive property.
