Jonathan continued to work on determining the unknown missing number or addend in addition and subtraction using whole numbers. He continues to refine his algebraic thinking through problem-solving and writing equations. At the end of the session, Jonathan was administered an assessment quiz on which he got 80%. Again, he is encouraged to check over his answers before submitting his paper.
After our daily language review, we jumped into writing. Today, Jonathan wrote his last paragraph and drew his final illustration in his rough draft of his snowy day piece. We worked to find the appropriate transition word to start the paragraph and worked to stretch out his ideas and make them more exciting. We also worked together to write a conclusion to his story. For grammar today, we worked on subjects and predicates. We pulled phrases including the subject and phrases using just the predicate out of a bag. Jonathan then sorted them by subject and predicate on a sorting mat. He enjoyed creative liberty of making fun sentences with the phrase pieces. One sentence he generated about large brown kangaroos sleeping under the bed got him giggling so hard! It was delightful to see him so engaged and enjoying the activity! He then marked the subject noun and verb in each sentence. We enjoyed two more chapters of our novel, The Knight at Dawn. We are working on oral fluency and making predictions. Jonathan used the text some to assist him with his reader response questions. On Reading Eggspress, Jonathan read a short story. He was then presented with short text examples and passages in which he had to answer multiple choice questions focused on the following skills: main idea, root word, interpreting character’s feelings and actions, drawing conclusions, and identifying the author’s purpose and mood. Some of these were challenging for Jonathan. We will revisit this activity in a future session. Religion: Today in lesson 22, we read about how we join with our parish for the celebration of Mass. At Mass we celebrate the Eucharist. Jonathan found three things he can do to take part in Mass in his word search, used the words Mass and Eucharist in one sentence, and judged statements about Jesus and the Last Supper with the appropriate smile or frown face. He scored a 5/5 on his follow up quiz for this unit.
Jonathan "taught me" how to draw and design on his tablet. It was necessary to have good eye/hand control to be successful!

There was aome confusion with jonathan not leaving early as had originally been the case. He stayed with me and Christopher the last half hour of the day today, 2/13/20. They got along well together.
1. Jonathan Read material on President Washington and President Lincoln , after which he created a VENN diagram comparing and contrasting the two.
2. We then read a book titled, ”The Day It Rained Hearts”.
Jonathan continued practicing finding the unknown number. He solved linear as well as word problems problems by applying strategies using counters, connecting cubes, 10-frames, number paths and by decomposing numbers to find the missing number (the unknown). Jonathan primarily solved these problems by counting backwards in his head, drawing counters occasionally to show his work. He benefits from reminders to check over his work before submitting it. He was also tasked with writing out corresponding equations to go with the word problem. An assessment was administered during the session on which Jonathan got 100%.
Assignment
Jonathan is to complete one Math Homework sheetfrom yesterday, p. 361,362
Jonathan was given his template for his Pokemon design, flipped it over, placed graphite over the rear and I helped him position it on to his canvas for transfer. Once Jonathan and I were able to do the transfer to his canvas I had him use a dark gray to paint in of the body of his 1st character. Jonathan followed the same process to add color to the face, headband, and additional accessories of the character.
Today was Word Work Wednesday! Jonathan was not familiar with using a dictionary, so we explored the children’s dictionary a bit. We practiced a guide words activity in which we were given three example dictionary pages with guide words. We found the pages that 15 different words would go on in our imaginary dictionary. Our focus word today was “hurl”. We used the dictionary to find the definition and part of speech, find the guide words on the top of the dictionary page, identify a synonym and antonym, and use the word in a sentence. This is a new activity we are beginning to enhance vocabulary growth and add to Jonathan’s Lexile. In his iReady textbook, we continued discussing using context clues to find word meanings. Jonathan read in his source text, Earthworms, to find the meaning of “surface” as used in the text. Next, he continued working on his writing piece in progress about having fun on a snowy day. After that, we read chapter 2 of our new novel, The Knight at Dawn. We worked through our reader’s response journal afterwards. We enjoyed a fun article from Newsela entitled, Hoping for candy on Valentine's Day? How about bacon flowers? The article discussed research findings that only 1 of 3 people wanted flowers on Valentine’s Day with more people wanting food. As a result, food bouquets such as bacon with chocolate, beef jerky, pickle, and various candy bouquets have become popular. Jonathan correctly answered all of the follow up comprehension questions about the article.
Finally, we finished our day with a little time on the Reading Eggspress website. Jonathan worked through some spelling and proofreading tasks of short vowels. Religion: Today we continued with Lesson 22. We read about the celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Mass was a vocabulary word, which means “another name for the celebration of the Eucharist”. We read about how Jesus is with us in a special way at Mass and that he is with us always. We read our song for this lesson and Jonathan completed fill in the blank sentences of key concepts from the lesson with scrambled words to help.
