Jonathan continued learning about solids and began learning about the properties of liquids, exploring questions such as why does water splash, why do balloons float in the air, and why does ice melt. Jonathan answered questions correctly and worked well independently. We checked on the progress of the popcorn kernels we had placed in water Wednesday, to see if they started to germinate, and we observed what looked to be little tails sprouting, or germinating, from one of the ends of the seeds after 4 days half-submerged in water. Jonathan made predictions based on observations. We wondered if there would be a difference if the kernels had not been heated and plan to experiment with those as well. We discussed the importance of careful documentation to record our observations and findings.
Today, Jonathan refined his ability to add three numbers. He was afforded practice in solving problems using different strategies and demonstrated a sound understanding and ability to apply different strategies to arrive at the correct sum(s), and understand missing addends and number bonds. We should be finishing up this particular skill within the next day or two before moving on to subtraction. We purchased additional resouces to supplement and enrich our work.
Jonathan began by completing his Wednesday and Thursday Daily Language Reviews. These reviews focused on capitalization, punctuation, opposites, rhyming, and beginning/ending sounds. He then worked on "cause and effect:" *I suggested a cause and Jonathan told me a possible effect. I also reversed this, giving him the effect and he told me a possible cause. Jonathan read, aloud, "The Snowy Day." First, he focused on the characters and the settings in the story. The next activity to accompany this story asked Jonathan to write an effect for the given cause. He showed how he came up with his responses by using the text. The next area of study focused on story writing. This will take several days to complete. Jonathan began by brainstorming ideas for things he would like to do on a snowy day. Jonathan generated seven ideas. He picked four of these to write on his planning web. He picked the four that he thinks he will be able to write the most about when he writes his story. We worked on this for 15 minutes. The last part of today's lesson found Jonathon reading a one page story titled, "The Dog Ate My Homework." He wrote the answer to five story related questions, remembering to answer in complete sentences. Time allowed for him to complete the section on "cause and effect" as it related to the story.

Lesson Comments
Jonathon stays focused on his work. He is a delight to work with!
Jonathan was given his clay sculpture and instructed to paint three coats of yellow paint to his sculpture. While the sculpture was drying we worked the design that Jonathan wanted to create for his canvas project, a Pokemon tribute.
We reviewed vocabulary words including mass, shape, and mixture. We then discussed how you can measure the mass of a solid. Next, Jonathan learned what makes a mixture and that solids in a mixture do not shape - they just get mixed up but can still be sorted out of the mixture. Jonathan was attentive while learning and demonstrated good comprehension of the material,
Jonathan continued to develop, practice, and refine adding 3 numbers. Today he primarily worked on word problems, using a variety of practiced strategies from his tool kit, including counters, connecting cubes, decomposing a number, number bonds, and ten-frames. We also reviewed the commutative property and saw how changing the order of the addends did not change the result, using examples as proof. Jonathan worked independently and took more time to insure his answers were correct by checking them over.
Assignment
No homework today. Jonathan should enjoy spending time with his friends :)
