Richard had a great session today. He worked on TH in the initial, medial and final position of words. He continues to improve in his accuracy at the sentence level but in conversation he requires cues.
Richard also attempted to meet two of his other goals today- combining sentences and reading comprehension. These were challenging due to his difficulties/ avoidance of reading. He said he did not want to continue today as it was too hard.
Richard practiced his spelling words with magnetic letters. We played Roll and Read to review CVVC words and CVCe words. He read books with words he can read.
We reviewed the Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education case which ended the legal segregation of schools. We also noted that before Brown v. Board of Education, the family of a woman by the name of Sylvia Mendez fought against school segregation in California. In 1943, students of Mexican descent were not allowed to go to school with white students. Her case, Mendez v. Westminster ended segregation in California schools. We read that the case was argued by a lawyer named Thurgood Marshall, who was the same lawyer who argued Linda Brown's case in Brown v. Board of Education. Richard was encouraged to note the similarities in the two cases.
Session began with bilateral active stretching to calves. Student then ambulated around school hallways and playground with heel to toe contact. Session incorporated self-defense moves with another student to work on coordination and sensory processing. Student tolerated session well today.
Richard and I began with a decimal review on how to say decimal amounts and each digit's place value. Then, Richard used a decimal place value chart to model decimal amounts to the tenths and hundredths place by shading the given decimal amounts. Using this manipulative, Richard recognized that decimal amounts can be combined to make a whole amount by shading ten of ten parts or a hundred of hundred parts. Finally, Richard used the remaining time to practice basic multiplication facts with an online race car game.
Richard focused today on his placement of letters, position of his words, his pencil grip, and his posture as he wrote today's informative/explanatory lesson about ways to help at home.
