Kellan read his Dog Man book today. Independent reading allows students to choose their own reading materials based on their interests and development level. The main goal is to create a reading habit for students.
Kellan began with a timed multiplication facts drill with the 3s facts before we continued to work on line plots. We reviewed how to understand and read line plots using the title, scale, and data points. Then, Kellen applied his understanding of these graphs to answer the lesson's problem-solving questions, which we did together.
Kellan read about xylem and phloem in plant stems. He viewed a diagram of xylem and phloem, and the direction of water and food flow. He diagrammed and labeled xylem and phloem and wrote a summary of their functions. He watched a video animation of xylem and phloem.

Lesson Comments
When Kellan asked what he is going to do all summer without our class, I suggested that he write his ideas in a journal so he will be ready to write when school starts.
Kellan began with a timed multiplication facts drill with the 2s and 3s facts. Then, we continued to work on understanding the purpose of line plots and how to read their data. Our focus today was to make a line plot to display data sets of measurements by drawing a number line, writing a title and scale, and drawing dots for each unit of data.
Kellan read about taproots. He drew a diagram of a taproot and wrote a sentence summarizing the definition of a taproot. He read about soft stems and woody stems. He viewed a picture of each type and summarized the differences. He drew diagrams of soft and woody stems.
