Joshua has expressed an interest in taking the AP version of Modern World History next year. We reviewed the course description and table of contents on the College Board/AP Central website. The course is very dense and covers a lot of time from circa 1200 to the preset day. The book used is called "Ways of the World - a Global History." The most recent is the 4th edition and it is available for purchase on Amazon if Joshua would like to get it and peruse it for summer reading.
James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England and Lord of Ireland, and thus a potential successor to all three thrones. In 1603, he succeeded the last Tudor monarch of England and Ireland, Elizabeth I, who died childless. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era and styled himself "King of Great Britain and Ireland". In his reign, the English colonization of the Americas began. Under James, the "Golden Age" of Elizabethan literature and drama continued, with writers such as William Shakespeare and Sir Francis Bacon contributing to a flourishing literary culture. James sponsored the translation of the Bible into English later named after him, the Authorized King James Version. He was succeeded by his second son, Charles.
Jacinda Ardern (born July 1980) is the 40th prime minister of New Zealand since 2017. She attended a state school and graduated from the University of Waikato in 2001, she was first elected in 2008 as president of the International Union of Socialist Youth. Ardern was unanimously elected as deputy leader of the Labour Party in 2017. Labour's support increased rapidly after Ardern became leader, and she led her party to gain 14 seats at the 2017 general election. After negotiations, New Zealand First chose to enter a minority coalition government with Labour, supported by the Green Party, with Ardern as prime minister. She was sworn in by the Governor-General in 2017. She became the world's youngest female head of government at age 37. Ardern gave birth to her daughter Neve on 21 June 2018, making her the world's second elected head of government to give birth while in office (after Benazir Bhutto). Ardern describes herself as a social democrat and a progressive. The Sixth Labour Government has faced challenges from a housing crisis, child poverty, and social inequality. In the aftermath of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, Ardern rapidly introduced strict gun laws, and throughout 2020 she faced difficult choices in leading New Zealand's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ardern led the Labour Party to victory in the 2020 general election, gaining an overall majority of 65 seats in Parliament, the first time this has happened since the introduction of proportional representation in 1996.
Should FL Reclaim the Reedy Creek/Lake Buena Vista District from Disney World?
Lesson Outline
In central FL, Reedy Creek is a special purpose district that was created by FL state law in May 1967. It gives The Walt Disney Company extensive governmental control over the land in and around its central Florida theme parks. As a special purpose district, Reedy Creek gives The Walt Disney Company extensive governmental control over the land in and around its central Florida theme parks. In April Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law that eliminated the unique legal setup that allows Disney to operate as an independent government around its Orlando-area theme parks. Yesterday, Florida Gov. DeSantis suggested that the state would take over Disney World's self-governing Reedy Creek district rather than handing control over to local governments. Joshua is very much in agreement with how Governor DeSantis is handling this issue. He believes the Reedy Creek/Lake Buena Vista district should not be its own entity and that it should be governed by the State of Florida. Great questions and discussions in class today, Joshua!
We considered the social, political and personal reasons Elizabeth I chose not to share power by marriage or to have children during her 44 year reign of England. Perhaps many of these decisions originate from her personal childhood and young adult experiences. She did not want to repeat some of the mistakes made by her father, King Henry VIII. Upon her death in 1603, the crown passed to James VI of Scotland.
