The Reign of Elizabeth I, con't.
Lesson Outline
During the reign of Elizabeth I in the 16th century there was a literary flowering in England. During the 1590s, some of the great names of English literature entered their maturity, including William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe and the English theater would reach its peak. The notion of a great Elizabethan era depends largely on the builders, dramatists, poets, and musicians who were active during Elizabeth's reign. Though Elizabeth followed a largely defensive foreign policy, her reign raised England's status abroad. "She is only a woman, only mistress of half an island," marvelled Pope Sixtus V, "and yet she makes herself feared by Spain, by France, by the Empire, by all". Under Elizabeth, the nation gained a new self-confidence and sense of sovereignty, as Christendom fragmented. Elizabeth was the first Tudor to recognize that a monarch ruled by popular consent. She therefore always worked with parliament and advisers she could trust to tell her the truth. Priding herself on being "mere English", Elizabeth trusted in her religion, honest advice, and the love of her subjects for the success of her rule.

Queen Elizabeth I
Lesson Outline
Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn. One of her first actions as queen was the establishment of an English Protestant church, of which she became the supreme governor. This Elizabethan Religious Settlement was to evolve into the Church of England. Elizabeth never married and produced an heir. In religion, she was relatively tolerant and avoided systematic persecution. During her 44 year reign, Great Britain grew to an international empire. England defeats the Spanish Armada and becomes the leading colonizing and naval power in the world.

The History of NASA & the Apollo Space Program
Lesson Outline
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and space research. NASA was established in 1958, succeeding the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The Apollo program, also known as Project Apollo, was the third United States human spaceflight program carried out by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which succeeded in preparing and landing the first humans on the Moon from 1968 to 1972. We looked at each of the Apollo missions & crews, from the tragedy of Apollo 1 to the triumph of Apollo 11 and the final lunar mission, Apollo 16. As one astronaut observed, you can't see Earth's man-made geographic boundaries from space. What's visible is our "oneness" as a planet, the Earth's beauty and the need for its inhabitants to take care of the planet and each other.

King Henry VIII
Lesson Outline
Today we began to learn about the Tudor Dynasty and King Henry VIII as a young king - still married to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Joshua did not know that Henry VIII was the father of Queen Elizabeth I. Joshua is very interested in and wants to learn more about European History. I shared that 10th grade Modern World History is a really comprehensive and interesting course and it covers vast events and time periods in European history, as well. We will continue to look at 16th century Europe, changing dynasties and geographic borders throughout the week.

How Shifting Migration Patterns are Affecting Life in Florida
Lesson Outline
One of the five major themes of geography is movement. We are seeing how population movement patterns and migration are affecting FL and our lives here on a very local level. According to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2021, a total of 61,728 New Yorkers applied for a Florida driver's license. New Jersey was second on the list with 32,083. Most Floridians would eventually see the first signs of their arrival, as the housing market grew increasingly more competitive. Newly elected Jupiter Mayor and longtime city councilman Jim Kuretski says managing all these newcomers is a challenge. "So many people from up North coming down here with money to spend, and they are outbidding people in this area," Kuretski says developers would like nothing better than to clear some land to build more high-end homes and maybe a new mall. "I was elected because I say no", said Kuretski. He says, "many people who cherish Jupiter for what it is and want it to remain uniquely Jupiter expect us to keep it the way it is." Joshua was tasked with finding solutions to the growing population issues in FL. How can FL accommodate newcomers and keep the cost of living affordable for all FL residents? These are current day human geography issues and challenges happening literally in our own backyards.

Practice Test
Lesson Outline
This was our last class before Joshua's AP Human Geography exam. Joshua spent the period working on Princeton Review's practice test 2 to help him get ready and in the appropriate frame of mind prior to the official test. Out of the 34 completed questions, 14 were wrong amounting to a score of 59%. When I asked Joshua what he can do to effectively prepare for the actual AP exam, he said he intends to re-read chapter summaries and glossaries in all three AP Human Geography resources.

We spent the period evaluating Joshua's HW to write an FRQ about modern agriculture. A stronger answer would use words such as : biotechnology, agribusiness, salinization, and urban sprawl. These are all terminology that would have enhanced this response on modern agriculture.
