Penny watched a video on land formations and then created her own body of water, land, mountains, and islands out of icing, Hershey kisses, and graham crackers. Penny then drew her land formations and labeled each of the areas.
Healthy Foods – We discussed health foods and she watched a video-titled “Healthy Food | Science For Kids | Periwinkle”. She sorted pictures of foods into 2 groups: the healthy foods and not healthy foods.
Identify Upper/Lower Case Letters and Letter sounds – We played the “Pop the Letter” game.
Penny practiced measuring items with a ruler and yardstick. Penny even measured her flower that she planted for Earth Day, and we will track the data each day. Penny also surveyed the students and staff for their favorite cookie and created a data chart and bar graph based on the data.
Sight Words - Penny read a few books titled “Go Not”, “We Run”, “On the Farm”, and “Can See It?”. Reading these helps to reinforce her knowledge of the words – we, go, they, run, can, you, it, see, and the; while also checking for understanding and comprehension.
Penny learned about Earth Day and discussed ways we can take care of the planet. Penny started to plant a red mandevilla and enjoyed working with the soil. Penny also colored and created a visual representation of the Earth. We will finish both projects and our discussion on planets tomorrow.

Lesson Comments
Penny LOVED working with the soil! She seems to really enjoy things with texture.
Earth Day – We reviewed the important points from yesterday's Earth Day videos about reuse, recycle, and reduce. She also made a bird feeder out of a 3 liter plastic bottle (Reuse).
Sight Words – We played the game, “Word Chase!: A Brilliant Fun Game for Reading Success” by Beyond Learning. It is a word race game, reading words as you zoom around the board.
We played a game guessing and identifying letters and spelled simple words. Penny then enjoyed drawing pictures using the beginning letters of the words and then writing the letters on a whiteboard. She had difficulty writing a lower case 'a' but was able to discern what she did wrong when she saw a model of the letter, and she replicated it correctly.
Penny worked on pronunciation of long vowel sounds and created words using the long vowel sounds. Penny also learned about the silent e in words in order to create the long vowel sounds.
Earth Day – Penny watched the “Brain Pop” video titled “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” yesterday. We reviewed this video and then she sorted pictures into two categorized groups, recycle and compost.
Sight Words – Penny read her words on her word ring.
