Video project -
Will selected a portion of a video I have that shows common dolphins. He cut out his selection and joined it to his video that we made last week. He selected different transitions to use to join the videos. He separated the two clips from their audio tracks. He selected some sound effects, including jungle sounds and ocean wave sounds.

Video effects -
Will and I watched video of how sound is applied to a video. We saw actors read their lines in a sound booth, and how voices are manipulated to have impact. We also watched how different sounds can change the emotion of a piece of video. Will saw some home videos with special computer effects added, and noticed that the computer screen to do these effects looks remarkably similar to Photoshop and iMovie.

Video editing -
Will used iMovie to combine the video he shot with the video we captured from the Internet. He worked on selecting an entire clip, and then portions of a clip. He experimented on adding audio to a video, as well as an sound effects to a clip. We watched a video of a Foley artist apply sound effects to motion pictures. Will was surprised to see how sound effects are created. Homework: find a video clip from the Internet that you may wish to incorporate a portion of into your project.

Video project -
Will and I watched a video that showed some behind the scenes filming from the Star Wars films. We paid close attention to some of the editing. I asked him to find two sample videos about Star Wars. He selected two trailers from the latest release. I then asked Will to allow me to video him walking through the school, for a video-editing project. We downloaded the video and I described the editing he will be doing next class.

Teacher portrait -
Will was tasked with photographing the teachers that had not been available during our school photo weeks. We also took photos of the school, in a similar manner as we did when we first started the photography class. We downloaded his work, and discussed how much more comfortable he is with the process, compared to last fall. We also discussed a video project for next week.

Video project -
Will took some video with his concentration on holding the camera. We watched the result and discussed his hold and how to avoid shaky camera. We worked on focus and zoom. Will then took video, panning from one side to the other at various speeds. We watched the video, and decided what speed was suitable and how moving too fast or too slow made the video unreadable. Homework: make a ‘before and after’ video.

Nikon camera -
I showed Paige how to use her new Nikon camera. After a tour of the buttons on the camera, I showed her how to control the focus control, so she could take photo with the subject off center if she chose. We then discussed how to change the f-stop to widen or narrow the frame to isolate a subject in the field of vision. Finally we discussed how to change the aperture to capture movement in a photo. Paige has a keen interest in photography, so we discussed the different kinds of professional photographers there are, and examined the work of some of the best.
