Miss Judie’s Birthday -
Will was tasked with photographing Miss Judie’s birthday celebration and the Valentine's Day activities. We then downloaded them to his computer, and sorted out all that were not acceptable. Will and I reviewed his work and we talked about how he could do better next time, or where he excelled.

Photoshop assignments -
Ana and I worked on her photoshop assignments. We changed the background of a photo, and constructed a collage of her favorite subjects, and a contrast drawing of the scream by Edvard Munch.

Deconstruction Earth -
Will and I discussed the difference between a jpeg and a pdf file. Pdf stands for ‘Photo_Shop_Document’ and includes all projects with layers. Then we discussed when and where we would use jpegs as well. Then Will and I worked on deconstruction earth. We added more ‘lava’ and I encouraged Will to play around with the smudge tool to create an effect he wants to use. We discussed how, when and why he would merge layers.

Recycling is an art photo shoot -
Will was tasked with collecting photos of the Batt school’s entry into the Arti Gras program: ‘Recycling is an Art 2016’. Will and I discussed where to stage the bin, the amount of light and the background that would be best. We moved the bin into the dojo and examined the appropriate direction and angle that would lead to the best photos. We explored which camera angle would be best, and Will decided to use two . He took photos, from a standing and a kneeling point of view, of all four sides of the bin. Once he was finished I gave Will two different lenses to try; the wide angle lens, and the macro lens (used to photograph very close up images). We compared and contrasted these lenses and listed the different scenarios where they would be best used.

Destruction Earth -
Will combined his image of the Earth and the Lava image he created. I introduced him to the smudge tool, and he used it to improve the look of his lava layer. I showed him how to use the lasso select tool, and the hue/saturation adjustment tools to add pieces of lava to his earth image. I demonstrated how to merge the images and use these new tools to ‘deconstruct’ the earth. Homework: use the smudge and saturation keys to play around with his project. There is no wrong move here, just play with the tools.

Filters -make lava 2-
Will and I again explored the different kinds of filters available to try to simulate a molten earth. Will examined many images of lava, and we discussed the color, hue, saturation and shadows that are visible in the photos. We tried again, and succeeded in making a passable “lava effect’ with Photoshop.

Filters -make lava 1-
Will and I used the different filters to make a “lava effect’ with Photoshop. We explored how to use the render and style filter pallets to simulate a texture. We used a cloud-like base and adjusted a color overlay. Our final product looked more like a pizza than lava, so we will explore some other filters next time.

T fighter drone project -
Will completed this project by attaching two lasers to the ti-fighter and making the final adjustments to the composition. Once the final was saved and a jpg copy was generated we started to discuss what other skills he might want to investigate. We examined several images Photoshop provides to illustrate the different techniques possible with the software. Will suggested that he ‘destruct’ the earth. We found a suitable image of the planet and set up a new project.

T fighter drone project -
Will and I used the process we developed yesterday to make a laser for his T fighter image. After several starts and stops, it became clear that Will was unhappy with the effect. We explored the difference between after-effects, a software used to put lasers onto film or moving pictures, and photoshop, which does the same for still images.
We worked on a laser but upon comparison with the star wars lasers we figured we needed to start over and use more contrasting colors. We will try again next week.

Lasers -
Today Will worked on his computer, while I worked on mine. He followed my lead, and we used a process used by industrial light and magic to make lasers in Photoshop. We started with color selection, and then used the transform: skew function, and the transform: shape function. With a series of twists and turns, we were able to make a decent laser effect on a black background. Tomorrow we will attempt to make one for his drone project. Will did very well and was engaged and interested in this new process.
