Mercer enjoyed playing a game outdoors with a peer for the first half of the session. The two agreed on the rules of the game and compromised effectively when decisions had to be made or if they differed in rule-making. We discussed some issues of sportsmanlike conduct, such as conforming to established standards of rules and how to best deal with deviations of the norm if one disagrees in a way that is free from favoritism or self-interest. The inclement weather did not permit students to use the playground equipment for safety reasons, so we went indoors. For the latter part of the class in class, Mercer looked at some nature documentaries, most of which involved survival in the wilderness. He is very interested in topics in nature and will look for answers to his questions to satisfy his curiosity with evidence and facts researched on the internet.

Reading Comprehension Spelling Grammar Handwriting Wordly Wise Literature
Lesson Outline
We checked his spelling homework, and made corrections to the sentences he did for homework. He completed an activity using his Wordly Wise words in context. He finished reading his language arts story, "Tia Lola Came to Visit," focusing on the main idea, story details, sequence, and cause and effect. He answered questions over Chapter 8 of. "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler."
Go over the schedule for the rest of the year with Mercer so he knows what projects he has left. Work on color theory for the duration of class. Work on the tertiary colors drawing and work on blending the primary colors to make the secondary colors.
Following two part written instructions/Complete sentence structure.
Lesson Outline
Mercer was presented with a writing activity involving emoji emotions. We first learned that the word "emoji" combines two Japanese words, "e (picture) and "moji" (character). Mercer commented that he uses them on occasion but did not know the meaning of the word. He accessed prior information and knew that emojis are commonly used in electronic communications to add expression and emotion. He was tasked with looking at 8 emojis, to then write the emotion that he saw, and describe a time when he's felt the emotion. At first, Mercer only identified the emotion as he interpreted it. I asked him to reread the instructions and complete the assignment in accordance with specific directives. When focused, Mercer works independently and, despite initial resistance, completed all requirements, responding in well-constructed sentences to communicate clearly.
Lesson 2 Three Classes of Rock: We learned that metamorphic rock is formed from large increases in temperature or pressure. Metamorphism causes changes in mineralogy, texture, and chemical composition. Foliated metamorphic rock results from extensive deformation by regional metamorphism. They contain aligned, planar arrangements of mineral grains. Non-foliated metamorphic rocks such as marble result from minimal deformation of rocks containing one or a few minerals.
Assignment: Add notes on igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock to Science Notebook.
Today's lesson focused on Ancient Greek artifacts found in England that belong to Greece. Mercer read about the request to return the artifacts and the debate over to who the marble statues actually belong. Mercer spent the remainder of the class working on his class project.
