The Growth of Railroads
Lesson Outline
The railroad profoundly changed America - especially in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Railroad consolidation was the practice of combining separate companies in the railroad industry. There were powerful railroad barons who controlled this industry on both the east and west coasts...Cornelius Vanderbilt, James J. Hill, Collis P. Huntington and Leland Stanford. Railroads stimulated the American economy and helped industries such as cattle, lumber, coal, farming and other industries to thrive. We covered standard gauges, new railway technology, competition for customers and how the railroad positively and tragically changed America. Once the railroad became transcontinental in 1869, four time zones were established across the continent. Railroads touched the lives of thousands of Americans and redistributed the population across the US.

Observing Wildlife in their habitat
Lesson Outline
Bella was given an opportunity to observe several species of marine life in their habitat.

Wildlife observed included a shark, several species of fish including those commonly referred to as barracuda, sheepshead, catfish, greenies, spadefish, stoplight parrotfish, a small sea turtle, and at least a dozen manatees of varying ages and sizes.

Bella was also given an opportunity to interact with several exhibits explaining various aspects of the life of Manatees and our coastal waters here in Florida.

These exhibits included information on the anatomy of Manatees, the occurrence called red tide, and the presence of lionfish in our waters, and many more.

Bella observed a presentation given by one of our teachers Ms. Claudia who has written a paper on a specific toxin present in Red Tide.
