The election of 1860 - Lincoln is elected as the next U.S. President, but his victory short lived as the nation he would lead was about to disintegrate. Although Lincoln and the Republicans vowed not to disturb slavery where it already existed, the South didn’t trust Lincoln or the Republicans to protect Southern rights. Nevertheless, South Carolina was the first to secede in Dec., 1860, In Feb. 1861, TX Louisiana, MS, AL, FL & GA seceded. The group referred to itself as the Confederate States of America with its own president Jefferson Davis. Shortly after Lincoln’s inauguration, Southern forces attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The CIvil War had begun. Things moved very quickly following this event: VA, NC, TN, & AR all join the Confederacy. There was also a small group of slave-holding border states who tried to remain neutral as they were on the border between the North & the South. They were: MD, WV, KY, & MO. Sides were determined and an assessment of the capabilities of each side was made. We ended with a review of material that will be on the test on Thursday, 1/13.

Abolitionists were people who wanted to abolish slavery and the most heroic of the abolitionists were African Americans some who were former slaves such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass - who helped slaves escape to freedom along the Underground Railroad. They also helped to educate white Americans about the injustices of slavery. So, by the mid-1800s, slavery has become a very contentious issue in the U.S. We also discussed slavery and the West, sectionalism - why the Missouri Compromise of 1820 will no longer be effective in the mid-1800s. What was the Wilmot Proviso, the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas Nebraska Act, Bleeding Kansas? (All causes of the Civil War.) Who were John Brown and Charles Sumner?

Lesson Comments
Bella executed a pretty sophisticated hair color application in our last class. This was her first attempt. Although the result of Bellas application was substantially successful, finding and pointing out a couple of errors, discussing the cause and how to prevent them from reoccurring in the future is typically not the most fun for anyone. Bella was a little too hard on herself seeing the few errors we found. Ultimately she learned it was a chemical mixing issue and an issue with older color molecules applied onto the human mannequin hair that could not be overcome outside of cutting the hair. Bella is about 80% of the way through that haircut. She is also working through the frustration of next-level professional body mechanics while managing multiple hair-cutting tools in her hands. I continue to be very proud of Bella's progress.
