In 1861, 11 states joined the Confederacy with its capital in Richmond & its president, Jefferson Davis. The states were: TX, AR, MS, LA, AL, FL, GA, SC, NC, TN, VA. The border states were: MO, KY, WV, MD & DE. WV became its own state in 1863 when the 48 western counties in VA took an anti-slavery stance. Most white Southerners in the Appalachians were too poor to own slaves. The border states were very important to Lincoln: MO controlled parts of the Mississippi River, KY controlled the Ohio River, DE was very close to Philadelphia and DC was very close to MD. We then compared the North & the South. For starters, the North had: 1. a larger population, 2. more industry, 3. more resources, 4. a better banking system, 5. more ships & most of the Navy, 6. a more extensive railway network. Northern disadvantages were:1. Bringing the South back into the Union, 2. it had to invade the South & be off its own turf, 3. Southern support for the war was strong, 4. Strong military leaders such as Robert E. Lee. Southern disadvantages: 1. War had to be fought on their turf, smaller population of white, male soldiers. 2. Fewer factories produced less weapons, food and other supplies for the troops, 3. Belief in states' rights hampered the South's efforts as individual states refused to give the Confederate government sufficient power. In the beginning, the main goal of the North was to bring to the South back to the Union. Ending slavery was not a major concern at first.
Bella worked on solving algebraic math problems, focusing on rules, strategies, and tips to help narrow her answer choices. She was shown that perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals of one another. Bella was tasked to solve problems and use the slope intercept formula and substitute in the given point and the new slope to find the intercept and convert back to standard form. Bella will benefit from additional practice in algebraic operations and adding negatives.

I was asked to sub for Teresa today, 1-14-22,from 10 - 11:00 AM. (Math). It was beyond my ability to teach her but Marcus helped explain how to solve some problems. Bella struggled with the math. I will let Teresa know. Bella called her dad during the session to ask if he would call Elise and let her leave early. Her dad encouraged her to not miss her class but she insisted it was not important (music with Marcelle). She also wanted to call Laurie L. with me but I asked her not to call and told her we are to email Laurie if need be and copy Judie on the emails. She asked if this applied to her, but I refrained from saying it did although I did suggest it might be something to consider but that I was not the person to answer the question or make that determination. Bella said she should be able to text her since she babysits. We left it at that.
2-4 Parallel and Perpendicular lines – We learned to write equations to represent lines that are parallel and perpendicular to a given line. We graphed lines to show an understanding of the relationship between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. Then we solved real-world problems that involve parallel are perpendicular lines.
Assignment: For homework complete assigned problems.
Bella told me she did not study for this test. Her score of 82% was based on remembering what we covered in prior classes and that she asked me a lot of questions while she was taking the test. I'm always accessible and happy to answer questions while a student is taking a test. With adequate preparation, Bella could have scored well above a B- on this test. We are now beginning a unit on the Civil War - an extremely somber and complex time in American History.

Jaydn was my scheduled 3rd period student today. Thanks to Kendra, I was able to have American History with Bella during 3rd period so she could take the test she missed during our originally scheduled 1st period class today.
Bella was supposed to have a test on the Causes of the Civil War during this period today. Fortunately, we were able to have class 3rd period as Jaydn was absent and Kendra was able to make some adjustments to Bella's schedule so she could take her history test and not fall farther behind.
