Elements of Drawing
Lesson Outline
Start sketches for Lesson 2 in Bella's sketchbook. Using geometric and organic shapes, create a drawing of the human figure. Put the contour of the figure around the shapes to create a more realistic drawing of a person. This exercise will help Bella understand how shapes are integral to drawing.

Lesson Comments
Trying to have Bella draw on her own versus tracing and shading. We're trying to move towards being able to sketch from life so I think the shapes activity will build some confidence.

Topic 2 Linear Equations
Lesson Outline
2-1 Slope – Bella practiced finding the slope from a pair of points. She labeled the first set of points as the coordinates (x1, y1) and the second set of points as (x2, y2). Then she practiced using the formula for the slope:
m = (y2 – y1) / (x2 – x2). Next she practiced finding the slope from the graph of a line. First she looked at the eight linear graphs and determined whether the graph of each line was positive or negative. Then she located two points on the line and labeled them as (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). Then she used the slope formula as she did before.
Assignment: Complete the assigned problems for homework.

War with Mexico, con't.
Lesson Outline
In 1836, TX does become an independent republic & Houston is elected its president. TX wanted to be annexed by the U.S. Southern states wanted this too, because TX was a slave state. Northern states were opposed to statehood for TX. In 1845, TX officially became a state. We then turned attention to the New Mexico Territory. We discussed the Santa Fe Trail, William Becknell. We looked at the CA mission system (21) from San Diego to Sonoma. Started by Father Junipero Serra. After 1833, Mexico abolished missions and they became ranchos. Twice Pres.Polk offered to buy CA from Mexico, wanted the border w/TX set at the Rio Grande & offered to take over Mexico's debts owed to displaced U.S. citizens - for $30 million - and still Mexico refused. Together, Polk and Gen. Zachary Taylor provoked Mexico into war & Americans were divided. Democrats supported it, while Whigs opposed it. Abraham Lincoln & Frederick Douglas did not support the war. By Jan., 1987, the U.S. annexed CA. The Mexican War lost over 18,000 & Mexico's losses were greater. The war cost the U.S. $100 million & Mexico 1/2 of its territory! The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war in 1848. In the Mexican Cession, Mexico gave up the border region near the Rio Grande, CA & NM in return for $15 million and an additional $10 million for the Gadsden Purchase in 1853.

War with Mexico
Lesson Outline
Conflict over TX began with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Settlers to TX received land grants called empresarios from Spain (who still ruled Mexico.) The first settlers were known as the Old Three-Hundred and they were led by Stephen Austin. While Mexico hoped they could attract Mexicans to TX, most new settlers were Americans. The U.S. gov't offered to buy TX 2x from Mexico. Mexico refused and issued a decree to stop U.S. immigration to TX. This led to an uprising of Texan American settlers against the Mexican govt. The first battle was in Gonzales, then in San Antonio. After these initial victories, the Americans suffered a brutal defeat at the Alamo in 1836. Although Mexican troops continued to occupy TX, American Texans declared TX was an independent republic in 1836 and Sam Houston was named commander of TX forces. We covered the battles at Goliad (defeat) and San Jacinto (great victory).

Bella continued with the outline, draft, and writing of the compare and contrast essay. She outlined her ideas and discussed the details she would use to elaborate and support her ideas. When there wasn't enough support, she changed the details to be used. When completed, she then reviewed SAT vocabulary with an online program. She finished by taking an application quiz.
