We started talking about periodic trends. We learned the trends in atomic radius and ionic radius. Additionally, we learned about ions and the octet rule.
Settling Oregon & the Oregon Trail: Connecting the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean
Lesson Outline
The Oregon country, between the Rocky Mountains & Pacific Ocean, containing what is now Oregon, Washington, Idaho & part of Wyoming and Montana. We discussed other nations that wanted this territory and how the U.S. jointly occupied this territory with another nation. Fur trappers were the first to come to this region. Americans began traveling to Oregon to settle in the 1830s. Skirmishes and tragedies between settlers and Native Americans often ensued. We discussed the Whitman Mission, the "great migration" along the Oregon Trail, and settlement in the Willamette Valley. We discussed the concept of "Manifest Destiny" analyzing the famous painting. In 1846, President Polk and Britain set the border between Oregon and British Canada at the 49th parallel.

Lesson Comments
This was a remote lesson as Bella was not in school today.
Native American land east of the Mississippi River was valuable and white settlers wanted it. President Jackson agreed they should have it. Congress responded by passing the Indian Removal Act in 1830. In 1834 Congress created the Indian Territory in OK for Native Americans from the Southeast. In 1838 this resulted in the forced removal of Native Americans from their homes in the Southeast, WI & IL to march from their homes to OK under brutal conditions. This event is known as the Trail of Tears. The Seminole people of FL were the only Native Americans who successfully resisted their removal. We recognize names like Osceola, Dade, Military Trail from a nearly 10-year war fought between the Seminole & U.S. gov't. After 1842, nearly all Native American groups had been forced west of the Mississippi River.

Lesson Comments
Bella learned our second hour of class today remotely from home.
Bella took her first quiz. She's quite behind everyone so when ever you're back, maybe we can come up with a plan to catch her up. I could maybe have her do one large project instead of the smaller ones that the rest of the kids did.
