Even though there were War Hawks, calling for war with Britain, the U.S. military was not prepared for war. In addition, Americans underestimated the strength of the British and their Native American allies. But war with Britain started in July 1812 outside of Detroit, near the U.S./Canadian border. American naval Commander Oliver Hazard Perry was ordered to seize all of Lake Erie from the British/Canadian side and he succeeded. In Oct. 1813, outside of Detroit, the great Native American leader Tecumseh died at the Battle of the Thames. With his death, hopes for a Native American confederation died. In 1814 a young soldier from Tennessee begins slaughtering the Creek people in the Southeastern U.S. (We will return to Jackson in future classes). What's really shocking about the War of 1812 (and kind of overlooked in most history curricula in the 17th - 20th centuries) is that that the British not only attacked the U.S. on U.S. land - they burned down the White House in Washington, D.C. After sacking D.C., the British marched north and bombarded Forth McHenry from Baltimore Harbor. (Watching this bombardment, American lawyer, Francis Scott Key wrote the the lyrics to what is now the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Fighting between the invading British and the Americans finally stops in upstate NY after the Battle of Lake Champlain. One , final battle was fought in New Orleans where U.S. troops led by Andrew Jackson killed 100's of British soldiers. In 1814, the U.S. & Britain signed the Treaty of Ghent. Most Americans felt proud & self-confident at the end of the War of 1812. Americans now felt a new sense of patriotism and a strong national identity.

Bella finished the mixing of hair lightener and the application onto hair strands she wrapped in foils on the back of her mannequin head. This is a pretty sophisticated technique requiring the management of many steps in each section. Bella did very well with staying focused and remembering all the elements. The first application is always slow going, but she started to pick up some speed as she grew more confident. We should be finished the front sections of the head next week =)
In 1800, Thomas Jefferson becomes the 3rd president of the U.S. An anti-federalist (democratic-republican), Jefferson believed in reducing the power & size of the federal government. This is called "laissez-faire" which means "hands off." Jefferson believed that farming should be the primary strength and focus of the U.S. economy and he favored acquiring more land through westward expansion. With his Sect. of State, Albert Gallatin, Jefferson lowered the national debt. We discussed the Judiciary Act of 1801, John Marshall, Marbury v. Madison and the principles of judicial review. In 1800 the U.S. extended only as far west as MS. Owned by Spain, and then France, the area to the west of the MS River was the Louisiana Territory. In 1804, enslaved Africans, led by Toussaint Louverture successfully revolted against France and established Haiti. This event, along with Napoleon's need for $ to finance war with Britain led the French to sell the Louisiana Territory to the U.S. for $15 million. This is followed by the Lewis & Clark expedition (1804/06) and Zebulon Pike's expeditions (1805/07) out west. New Western lands cause some political division. We discussed the feud between Aaron Burr & Alexander Hamilton. The American shipping industry strengthened and profited from war between Britain & France in the 1790s. In 1804 Barbary pirates seized a U.S. warship off the coast of Tripoli & the U.S. had to pay a ransom on $60,000. Jefferson won reelection in 1804. By then, the U.S. had doubled in size & foreign trade was thriving. U.S.policy was to remain neutral in the war between France & Britain. In 1805, Britain began a policy of impressment.

Bella came in late today. We read and discussed a chapter from the novel being read. She cited text that supported the theme of despair. She then analyzed and discussed the protagonists mindset and made predictions based on text for what she might do.
Bella demonstrated some of her dance moves and choreographed a few routines, arranging movements to create her own happy little dance. After getting permission from her dad, I also accompanied her to McDonalds, by foot, where she purchased a snack.
