Bella was on line today and she left early today to go with her dad.
After taking office in 1801, President Thomas Jefferson promised to shrink the government, including executive powers. But many of his domestic achievements received criticism for doing just the opposite. He resumed the capitol building project and designed additions to the White House. The 1803 Louisiana Purchase angered people both inside and out of his own political party. Many believed the president didn't have the constitutional authority to make such a decision on his own. The same year, the Lewis and Clark Expedition returned from exploring the new Louisiana Territory and helped spur westward migration. Shortly before their return, the Pike Expedition was dispatched to explore the southern border of the territory and gathered valuable military intelligence about the state of the Spanish empire in North America. President Jefferson signed into law a bill that banned the importation of slaves into the U.S. beginning in 1808.
We are beginning a unit on “Influential Presidents & Speeches” to understand how they have shaped American politics and democracy. George Washington's Farewell Address was co-written with his close friend Alexander Hamilton. In this address he announced he would not run for a third term, and he also gave three warnings against what he saw to be threats against the preservation of the Union. His first warning concerned the dangers of regional sectionalism, the practice of people putting regional politics above the good of the nation as a whole. Second, he warned against political parties; he believed them to be divisive and possible tools used by tyrants. His final warning was that America should not become too involved with or too close to any one foreign nation. He believed doing so could lead to that foreign nation having sway over domestic American policy. Washington chose to leave office after two terms. He told those upset with his decision that he didn’t fight a revolution to become a king. His choice to retire after his second term set a precedent for future presidents to follow.
Today, Bella and I began the lesson by completing the first half of Warm-Up #3 in "Calisthenics for the Brain." We read all of the modern translated version of Act 1 Scene 2 of Othello. We observed lines 6-10, where Lago tells of the conversation he had with Roderigo. We drew a T-chart where we compared and contrasted what was said in Scene 2 with Scene 1. In the first column, we wrote down the key items of information given here by Lago. In the second column, we recorded how it was presented in Scene 1.
Today we carefully looked at the ballot for the midterm elections. Bella was introduced to how a voter may evaluate candidates and issues to become knowledgeable voters, making the voting process prepared, swift and personally meaningful.
In today's class, Bella did an experiment where we measured the rate of carbon dioxide buildup from yeast cells that were undergoing fermentation. We took two flasks, filled them with yeast and sugar, and covered each flask with a balloon. One flask stayed at room temperature while the other was placed in a warm water bath. The diameter of the balloons was measured at regular intervals. This experiment ties in with what we learned about alcoholic fermentation.
