Using Poe's "The Raven" , we first examined and defined narrative poetry, rhyme scheme, and alliteration . I explained how to chart a stanza's rhyme scheme and Jaydn did well in identifying the use of alliteration. Thematically, we noted the classic conflict in Poe between the rational and the dark irrational aspects of life as the raven perches upon the "bust of Pallas" ,Pallas being the mythological goddess of wisdom . We further discussed how language creates the poem's mysterious mournful mood as we read through the opening stanzas.
Today we begin the review of the chapter learned from the beginning of the school year, the vocabulary of transportation and the airplane. She completed pages 51 and 52 of the book.
Today, we started working on Chapter 3. We explained the law of conservation of mass, the law of definite proportions, and the law of multiple proportions.
We analyzed Poe's short story "The Tell Tale Heart" by discussing mood, irony, and imagery. Jaydn exhibited astute comprehension skills in identifying the author's intent-to create tension and fear-and in identifying the use of auditory imagery and verbal irony. We then examined the madness of the narrator as evidenced by the first person point of view. I explained the concept of the doppelgänger and the symbolism and double meaning of the "eye"(the I) as the source of the narrator's terror. We discussed how modern horror movies rely on external sources of horror while Poe explores the internal horror of the irrational mind.
Today she finished one activity from the book, pages 50 and 51. It was a comprehension activity where she had to listen to a conversation at the airport between Susana, and Pedro and answered some questions after. She did well today.
